The native salmon are running in Tas at the moment, we devoured a rather large one last night and half filled our big freezer with the catch. Caught a couple of escaped Atlantic salmon as well, but gave them away as they are awful. When we go to Aus, we take frozen and smoked salmon, trout and Tuna with us for the trip. Nothing like a good cold beer and home smoke fish to nibble on.
I was at Parry's Beach about two years at the camping ground, professional salmon fishermen have a camp there nearby and bring their catch into the beach area, they were selling them for $5 each where they landed them or gave you a couple free if you helped them unload the boat.
They were huge, good fish cleaning facilities on the beach too. Many campers were fishing off the flat rocks there (also beach) but I did not see them pulling any salmon in, mainly Herring and Silver Trevally (Skippy). I can't remember what time of the year that was now, but this link shows some pic's of the fishermen bringing in the Salmon at Parry's and says they were running in 2013 in March.
When I was down there at Parry's they told me the Salmon taste better when hung and bled, being an experience fisherman can you give any feedback on that KJ ?

Now you've bought back some very happy memories,( Native Pepper )
"Boy" is the mouth watering now, just thinking of eating that fresh grilled Tassie Salmon,
while we were camped in St Helens,
I've got to say, they were the best fish we have ever tasted.
The local Fish & Chip shop on the foreshore did a cracker feed up for us,
which we took back to the Caravan park and devoured on bench seats in front of many campers.
I did notice there was a large exodus towards the Fish & Chip shop not long after we sat down. . LOL.
Thanks for the links, Vic41.
"Yes", I always chop the head off any fish I catch, straight away as soon as I land them,
then shove them on end into the sand to Bleed, as they call it,
If you don't do that to some fish like Whiting, they have a very strong sour taste with them.
I believe the Salmon used to start running from the middle of Feb thru to the end of April,
but with the change in climate, they were starting to run later and a couple of years back
they never came anywhere near the beaches.
the fisherman had a spotter plane up for days and they found the schools of Salmon were 50km off-shore,
they stayed that way right around the Coast, then headed North to warmer waters.
Maybe with a lot of luck, a couple of good ones will come my way in a couple of months time, Fingers xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
cheers kiwijims

Its a bit too early in the season still. Your best bet right now would be Windy Harbour. There should be some around there.
But if you're near Walpole ask for directions to the Blue Holes, there are always a few resident fish there.
Edit to add that I'll be fishing the gutters at Malimup (not far from Windy Harbour) around the third week of March, then follow them up around the coast.

I can vouch for blue holes, pulled 4 out or there in the last few weeks.

Very true, nothing beats the taste of Black back salmon. We catch ours on the edge of the shelf, where it comes within 10klm of Tas and the average 5-7kg. Anything smaller and we throw back for next year, great place to fish, except for the rogue waves that pop up on where the southern ocean meets the Tasman and Tas
Thanks for the info on the Blue Holes Guys,
That looks like the place I will be heading for in the next couple of months.
After seeing how rough the ocean can get around Tassie while crossing in the Ferry,
I don't think I would join you fishing next time down that way thanks,.... Native Pepper
Far safer buying the Salmon in the F & C Shop.

Sounds very tasty Vic,
Nothing like fresh fish, especially after trying the stuff that is in packets now-days,
We had some stuff that was imported the other night, "GEEZ" What a load of foul tasting slops,
How they could even call it Fish, is beyond me !!
cheers K.J.

Some of the suburban F & C Shops leave a bit to be desired too KJ, I believe the F & C Shop at Two Rocks use fish bought in to the marina by the fishing boats there but been awhile since I've been there.
Took this photo when we were down at Bettys Beach on the south coast late last year... Says it all for the season - the freedom campsite is closed for the salmon season.

Great pic's Bryan, especially the school swimming through the waves. I see you had the same "lucky" shirt on with both pic's too!
PS: I once saw a shark swimming through a breaking wave like that, I had been body surfing and was just on my way back in after surfing a wave to shore, decided I had better give it away that day, lol !

Vic I always fish in the same colours. Kathy told me I was supersticious, which I denied, and she later presented me with two brown shirts and said, wear these then. I did once, blanked out and told Kathy when I came back that the shirt made me itch like crazy and dumped them for my blue shirt.
Just to show the boys from over East that we also catch Murray Cod in WA
Its on Boranup beach KJ. Very difficult to get in and boggy as all hell. Normal tyre pressure is 10 psi. We don't go there with less than 3 vehicles. Deep water right on to the shore break. Edited to add that Commercials can't get to the beach, access is very bad and of course the very soft sand.
Neil, the Murray Cod is from a farm dam in Beverley (close to where we were). We normally get there early on Saturday morning and leave Sunday lunchtime. Lure fishing only with crushed barbs, all catch and release. He charges $50 per night to camp at the dam. No facilities but who cares. There are some really big ones in there. I go there as often as I can except winter.
Its only open to a few of us and any friends we want to bring along.

I had the same idea when I put the post up. Spring is best. Will you be back in WA by then?
Golden Ponds in Baldivis has fishing ponds too, not sure if they are fish and release, the CP part of the accommodation was pretty cheap when I went there, powered sites and camp kitchen. Wombat and JRH and wives came for a coffee while I was there.

Should be pretty close I reckon, we'll keep in touch.
I already have my hat & sunscreen on thanks to Wombat.

Very definitely Neil. Just let me know when you're back. Give a bit of notice so I can arrange the date and see if anyone else is interested.
I'm starting to prep my salmon gear and getting ready for the season. I must also start making a few new top water lures. I just love the visual strikes.
