I often wonder how long it will be before we are a third world country. Maybe Paul Keating was right when he predicted we would become a banana republic
Just who is to blame
Its the level playing field....just ours is more level than the rest of the worlds. Maybe its time to get rid of the free trade agreements as they seem to only be free for the other countries and costs us
yep spot on. the free trade agreement is to blame for a multitude of lost jobs and services, we need to see import duties brought back to protect our jobs. but we also need to support Aussie made and owned. you only have to read some posts on this site to find that most people are more then happy to buy Chinese over Australian because of price. What people do not understand is that at some point in time there will be so many out of work the government have to find extra money from somewhere, so we come to cuts in pensions, health and schools increased rego etc etc.....end of rant
Thought I would share with you the following piece of info.
A panellist on a current affairs program related an instance many would have missed. Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda, was giving a luncheon address to a business group, (paraphrased):
Two years ago we were working so hard to create conditions whereby we could stay in this wonderful country and produce cars.
"We had restructured the business and, despite acceding to recent union demands for even better wages and conditions, we were seeing a dim light flickering at the end of the tunnel.
We were honest with our employees and had explained the seriousness of the companys economic plight.
"They had assured us of their cooperation, so we determined to all pull together in a desperate attempt keep the company viable.
There was an air of camaraderie, a feeling of hope.
It was Australia Day that week and it fell on a Thursday. On the Friday thirty percent of our workforce didnt turn up, thirty percent called in sick.
Thats when I finally realised we were stuffed.
Well Toyota work force, some of you may regret your actions on that particular occasion. But it is to late now.
First off today the Toyota big wigs stated that the closure has nothing to do with Unions etc...
Secondly, given how much we Aussies love our vehicles, not too mention find them essential given the rather poor and sad state of our public transport systems, don't remove the tariffs.....we have thousands of well skilled motor industry employees and will soon have some major car building infrastructure sitting empty, couldn't we design and build an 'Ozcar' range of say small, medium, large and ute and van....(don't go overboard with new models every 6 months) just good reliable vehicles with what Aussies need and want and the appropriate parts available?
Just the same as having good Aussie grown fruit and veg available to buy, stuff that tastes like real fruit and veg!
I am on very limited income and I can afford to buy Aussie and do so.
