Good old RFID raises its head again.

This is perfectly true and valid, but given that the chip in the card is passive (it does not have an energy source), and only harvests energy sent by the reader to send its response the range is very limited, it almost has to be touching the reader.

There are a number of wallets around with shielded portions, designed to make money out of allaying people's fears.

Just a point of interest, RFID was developed by the Royal Air Force in 1942 as a way to tell their planes apart from the enemy planes which would of course not have a transponder. The same concept and standards exist to this day, with minor refinements.

I was aware of the Snopes Report. One of the Current Affairs programs airing in Tasmania carried this story recently and a few days later I received this e-mail from a friend, which I thought was appropriate to post here. Technology is always changing so hopefully any loopholes in the Wi - Fi cards have been eliminated. It doesn't do any harm however to alert people to be careful with their Credit/Debit cards as there are always undesirables lurking in the background to steal card details.

Can you get that function disabled on these cards?

Gday...

This is what I have found on a few sites for Visa and Mastercard and the Paywave mob

Can I choose not to have a payWave card?

The option to elect a non-payWave card is not available as all new and renewal cards will be automatically issued with payWave. However, you have the option to not use the payWave functionality. You can still choose to swipe or dip your card using a PIN or signature even if a payWave contactless terminal is available.

Cheers - John

Even if this sort of theft was possible, you are not liable. This is from the Visa site:

What is Visa's Zero Liability Policy?

This policy is Visas guarantee that Visa cardholders will not have to bear any liability for an unauthorised transaction, which includes transactions done through theft of the card or card fraud.

We never have any more than needed for the day on our cards and take out cash for most transactions we make. We have a separate card which we use online for purchases and it never has anything in it but the transaction money.

The banks will give you your money back, but it's the time and hassle factor which is the problem. If someone takes your money and you're on the road, it can be difficult to have the problem fixed quickly and get access to your money. prevention is always better than the cure.

I have also heard anyone can use your card to make a purchase of up to $100.00 at a time without a pin or identification so if you loose it cancel immediately but i am going to the bank to confirm this

Cheers Yendorane

Totally agree milo, the only way to stop the banks from keeping this option is for EVERYBODY that has any card = CUT THE CARD UP and never use CC's or DC's again, but I do not ever see that happening.
