Hi all , my wife was just reading this article from National Seniors newsletter and it goes something like this. Our socalled government are seeking expressions of interest into retirees who own their own home because they want to NOW means test it and become part of your pension , as they can then reduce pensions and save money on their budget outlay. I am not sure of the final outcome as I cant find the article on their webpage, maybe some one a little more legal savy can work it out but apparently the government put this type of thing out and if we don't get up in arms they will implement it. there is also an article on GN`s and free parking, food for thought.

There was an article in a Brisbane newspaper recently that ACOSS has in its budget submission to Government, asked that the assets test for pensioners be reduced to $100,000 (currently $1.1 million).
That would affect a lot of people if it happened, especially if the family home was included in the assets.
After living and working overseas for over 20 years, when I returned to Australia I decided for various reasons, to rent rather than buy. I therefore receive Rent Assistance payment tacked on top of my Age Pension. Recently my Landlord made a modest increase in rent, and I was therefore required to notify Centrelink of the changes. They sent me out a Rent Certificate to complete and have the Landlord sign. I was surprised to note one Question: "Do you (and/or your Partner) own a home or have a Mortgage ? This includes Caravan, Cabin, boat, Mobile Home". What does all that mean ? Does the Govt. have a nasty surprise waiting for us ??

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
No there is no nasty surprise, it just means that if you own a home, you cannot get rent assistance, just because you decide to not live there but rent elsewhere.
If they changed the rules and your home would was counted as an asset many of us would loose our pension and starve to death, it wont happen any government that voted in that change would be out at the next election.
