We are about to embark on a journey along the Princess Highway through Lakes Entrance, and would like to go up further through Merimbula, Batesman Bay, Kiama. The thing is we need to go to Canberra and are wondering what would be the best road across, or to??? Would we be better to cut our losses and turn and go up the Cann Valley Hwy.....Manoro Hwy.
We tow a 24ft van so want to stay clear of very steep inclines and very windy roads, please help with the best route for us to take.
Looking forward to your valued suggestions.
Currently in Nagambie been in Central Vic for too long now and are getting fried to a cinder.
I would just go via Hwy1, nice trip all the way. From Nagambie you could turn off at Seymour and head through Yarra Valley to Pakenham then Hwy1 OR get brave and just go through Melbourne before or after peak hours for smoother running.
You could head up to Canberra and head over to the coast via the King Hwy but the trip is very hilly indeed, steep really. Much nicer the other way. All the places you mentioned a great.

We live on the coast just south of Nowra and have towed our caravan several times to Canberra via "Turpentine road" which turns off the Princes Highway just south of Nowra. (Look for the "Nerriga" sign) You pass through some pretty country and its no where near as steep as the Kings highway, or the road up Brown mountain between Bega /Cooma. But its a back road, there's a low bridge over the Shoalhaven at Oallen with a 5 ton limit, and a couple of k's of gravel which is ok. We go via Tarago, but you could miss that bridge by going via Braidwood, but there's about 15k's diet road there. You join the kings Highway at Bungendore.
If you are wanting to travel through Lakes Entrance and up to Batemans Bay and then follow the coast up to Kiama, had you considered leaving your van in Batemans Bay while you made your visit to Canberra - the trip takes approximately two hours. Of course I guess it depends on whether you had planned a lengthy stay in Canberra and needed your home on wheels for accommodation. We've travelled many times up the Kings Highway to Canberra (and back) with a van, but only with a single axle van, without any troubles. Although we have seen quite a number of larger vans travelling that route, so it can be done and the road is very good with wide turns on hairpin bends. Safe and happy travelling.................
We need to take our van to Canberra, so just need to know the best route across. We also have an appointment in Melbourne so will head down and will tow through and out along the Princess Hwy.
Looks like the turn off at Nowra is the way to go.
If you can stop at the Nowra Info centre, they can help you with road conditions and a map, the sign-posting on that road is a bit less than optimal.
Enjoy your visit to the south coast LR!
We came down the Kings Highway from Canberra to Batemans Bay a couple of months ago. On the way passed 3 vehicles with vans on, pulled over to side with bonnets up. Presume overheating - and it was not a not day. That might be indicative for you.

People have been towing up and down the Clyde Mountain since well before it was called the Kings Hwy . 99% have had no problem , its all goes into your vehicle preparation . The Clyde nowadays is a doddle compared to what it used to be .
When we travel to Eden from Sydney we always go down the Mt Imlay Road from Bombala. It comes out just south of Eden. It is the least steep road going from Canberra to the coast and very pretty. Bombala has a very nice caravan park too, on the river and cheap. If you came via Lakes Entrance you could go up to Canberra and then return the same way then make you way up the coast via the Princes Hwy.
Cheers,
Margaret
