In 4 years of traveling I am yet to stay in a CP..
When I bought my 1st MH and picked it up in Cairns around 4.00pm one friday I thought I would stop in a CP overnight to check it out and find out how everything worked so I stopped at the 1st CP I came to and enquierd about the cost of a spot to park NO Power, NO Water, NO shower, and NO toilet was required....
$37 he said take it or leave it.......
10k down the road was a cane loading pad so thats where I stayed..
!st and Last time in a CP for me..
They need to understand that we do have a choice and unless they offer a product we want then we will look for alternatives..
I Know I know lots of people like to stay in a CP's and that is their choice..
Thanks Oma, A good read and a number of well balanced common sense replies in that lot,These caravan parks and the bodies that represent them just cannot think outside the sqUare ?? THEY JUST DON'T GET IT ??
During Holiday periods there is usually not too many spots left on the coast. The CP's are jampacked and I think the schools are doing the community a service
Personally I would rather give my Cash to a School Over a CP..
a few years ago I was traveling up the coast and went to spend some time at Javis Bay area.. we where camping in tent's and just need a clear spot to set up.. We got told we could say for 3nights but had to shift sites between 2/3 night.. Well we stayed for 2 nights and then moved on..
From what I have learn t here, and with the setup I plan to have never again will I camp where I'm going to get over charged for services I don't use..

"Ms Ponting said commercial caravan parks had set regulations on spacing allowed between sites, on-site managers, safe disposal of grey water and registration requirements."
I had a chuckle at the above statement. I'd like to know those rules n regs. I was once, in Esperance, told to park my caravan in a certain spot. It was November, very quiet, hardly any vans. Huge CP.
It was physically impossible, for the length of my van, due to a shed and posts. So I showed them that and I scored a new site, with free ensuite!!!
And, many CP's ask for grey water to run on the grass????
Mind you, in free camps, I've had people park their caravans sooooooo close, their expanda bed nearly touched my bed window ( and they had 3 boys under 6yo) and another who couldn't put their awning up, they were so close to me. In both instances I packed up and moved, but I wasn't impressed!
I stayed in a CP about 3 Easters ago and that was the last time.
I hate the confined spaces and also that people think that to walk through your site to get to the amenities etc.
I could not light my choofer to cook my meals and they had so many rules but then they wanted the grey water dumped on the ground.
Was glad to leave and have never gone inot one since.
I will need to soon as my friend who I will be travelling with needs a address to change rego so we will do a night to get that ans then out back into the bush.
Regards
Brian

using school ovals is a fantastic idea. P & C's need to find ways to raise money. kids get equipment needed and travellers get an affordable spot to rest awhile. In future, I am going to check the schools out especially in holiday season. thanks for posting this article.
The replies on the article in the Sunshine Coast daily really sums up my feelings. Only time we use C.Parks are in towns like Cairns Townsville Macky Rocky etc, where free camping is very limited or non existent.
love to support the towns that provide the service for us.

I did a trip from Bundy to Cairns and back a few months ago, and although I can't speak about camping within the towns (I wouldn't want to stay in town anyway), I can say that there are numerous great free camps not far from all these towns. The most difficult was Bowen, where I had to get a fair way out before finding anything. Most of the camps are listed on Wikicamps and many are quite close to the towns. The only town I wanted to stay in was Innisfail, and I parked in friends yard. But on the way out I found that there were lovely free camps within 50km. I never use CPs and have not had any trouble finding somewhere to stay.
