In 1961 Tania Verstak, born in China to Russian political refugees, became the first "new Australian" to win the Miss Australia title, becoming Miss International the next year.

 

She rejected film try-outs and a US tour, refused to pose in a swimsuit and said she would rather go home and complete her charity duties.
