I've recently purchased an Apple iPad Air Tablet and I'm hoping to download a GPS system onto it. I'm a complete novice as far as GPS is concerned, having never owned or used one, but with the iPad apparently having the capabilites to be used as such I don't quite know where to start. If any of you clever people could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful. It's intended use would mainly be for when we're out and about with the caravan, so country driving, and it would be wonderful to be able to negotiate through larger cities and towns as well. I did use the search function but couldn't see what I wanted, and there are so many different brands on offer it appears a bit confusing. Any help would be appreciated.........................
Happydaze,
Be it an app on your tablet or a dedicated GPS unit, try to get one that gives you 'lifetime map update'. A gps device is only as good as the currency of the maps. A bit like a phone book, only as good as the day it was printed. There are a number of maps out there; Hema; Whereis to name some of the popular ones. Hema seem the popular choice for coordinate mapping.
Just like a lot of things, in order to get what is best suited for your purposes, research and more research.
Good luck.
Thank you folks for your helpful replies, your input is much appreciated. As was mentioned, research and then research some more appears to be the way to go.
First time on site. So here goes. We have ipad with hema 4wd maps ~ must be the wifi plus cellular model~ used it on our last across the top trip and it was excellent. It has 70 of the key Hema maps And works off GPS satellite. Hema have recently released another app which has street by street and trip planning features. Will have it soon too. Though we also added a telstra 4g mini SIM card and when in signal area can use the apple and google maps as well -$180 for 12 g for 12 months.
We are also very new with iPad. We would like to download some of hema maps, ozi explorer or something similar as the gps has. We have an iPad air, not cell but we bought a mobile 4g Telstra mobile wifi. and wonder if it will work on it. On the other hand do any one can explain what iCloud does and if it is a must please. Thank you for any help.
Cheers
re Ipad Air- you will have EITHER - a model that comes with wifi. Means you can connect to a wireless network such as at airports and Maccas or home if you have wireless internet.
OR - You will have a model that has wifi and cellular. This allows you to add a mini SIM card and to buy a mobile data pack and through the 4G network to connect to Internet wherever there is a mobile phone network by your provider. It also enables you to use apps such as Hema maps that work off satellite I.e. It acts like a GPS.
This is Apples version of the cloud. There are others.
it is in effect a computer somewhere where apple allows you to store stuff. by connecting your other devices to the same ICloud account you can retrieve the stuff anywhere by computer ipad, phone or all of them.
You will need an account to use ICloud. You will get a free storage allowance and after that you pay - so it is a business for Apple as well
