I wonder how many Aussies could tell you that Barton was Straya's first PM? One mental image that has always intrigued me is the sight of wild Australian bush that greeted the first European setters at Camp Cove. I'd love to take a trip in a time machine and show those guys a few pics of Sydney Harbor today. Can you imagine the looks on their faces?
Yeah, the Canberra fires. It was a horrible day, over 500 houses burnt, so many people with nowhere to go. I remember on the radio people ringing up to say they had a spare room and they'd welcome strangers into their home. Others phoned from elsewhere in Australia and said "Why the fuss about Canberra, its only politicians and public servants" ... the more GN's and others who travel this land and learn about places other than their home town, the less of this ridiculous ignorance there will be.
