I want to put a car radio / cd player into my caravan which doesn't seem to be hard to do so can anyone out there suggest the best wiring system, which enables memory to be retained when unit is turned off
Do you have separate 12v power in your van????
If YES then then it is easy just connect the red and yellow wire together and connect it to the +ve side of your battery and connect the black wire to the -ve side of your battery and remember to turn it off when you aren't listening to it..
If NO it cant be done easily..
Yes, you need to look into the spec. of the radio. When you turn the radio off from the front button it may still have power going to it to retain its memory.
Mine was installed when I bought the van and it has another switch which disconnects all power and losses its memory which is a real pain as it hard to re capture the channels.
You will have to look at the installation instructions that come with the radio. They often have a memory keep alive power line and a main power line. If your radio has these two power lines then there may not be much difference in the power draw between the radio switched off and on when both lines are connected to power.
If you have one of that style radio you need two switches. You switch off the main power one when not listening to the radio. You switch off both both the main and the memory keep alive when you store the van.

You must like making extra work for yourself Peter..
The radio has it's own on/off switch so that takes care of it when you dont want to listen to it and if it is going into storage for any length of time I would have though you would disconnect the battery to stop it from being discharged by whatever..
