Road Kill.

Just read in yesterdays' local paper, that a farmer has been fined $400.00 for skinning and butchering dead Roo's he had dragged off the road, to feed to his dogs.

Stock squad officers saw the meat in his ute, [parked outside the Great Western Hotel] and pounced.

So be aware, that free dog-food could cost you.   Personally, I think it's ridiculous.  Why waste good meat if it's only going to rot at the side of the road anyway?

Cheers,

Sheba.

I'm with you Sheba, bloody ridiculous, if someone can find a use for the huge volume of road kill on our highways and byways then good on them - they should be congratulated not punished.

That's what I reckon.  I've done it myself occasionally, years ago.  [ Hope this doesn't get me a fine too.] biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Bureaucratic stupidity aside, how safe is road kill, unless you've killed it yourself?

I reckon it'd be pretty tender especially after being hit with a bullbar then rolled a hundred metres under a truck.....minced meat?
Europeans enjoy 'hung' meat that's up to a week old.

To add to that stupidity, the same Toowoomba paper that had that report also reported that due to massive over population of roos, farmers could get a permit to shoot up to 1000 roos per property!

Bureaucratic stupidity is right. The guy's doing everyone a favor. What on earth would a dead animal on the side of the road be worth to a government agency? I can't believe I'm reading this.

On a similar topic we got a call from daughter inlaw a few hours ago asking if we could come over to the farm and dispatch a lamb that a dog had got into.
When we asked why us? we're old and ignorant of such matters she said that they don't have a permit to kill the animals themselves. Seems they must use a vet or
licensed butcher. She figured we were so old we would get away with it.

They will be dispatching the dog however as this is lamb number 5.

I would have thought you could mercy kill an animal?
