Mobile phone Data

As we are planning our first trip and what technology we will need, I would like to ask travelers what their average data usage is when just checking Facebook and checking emails.

Hubby and I are trying to assess how much Data we need with our Plan. At this this stage thinking of getting  Telstra Wi-fi 4G Advanced modem. We are trying assess the size/amount of data to purchase. My son who has worked in IT suggested that I ask in the forums what people are averaging

Hi Jenzari , I am using Telstra Wi-Fi 4G and very happy with it . Mine is for 8 gig per month and i use it at home as well as traveling . I do a little bit of downloading so i need that amount and i was told if you use your video on Skype to talk to family and friends it uses more data . Think the BigPond plans are for 4- 8 and 15 GIG but not sure how much data with Pre-paid . My mobile phone and internet is all in the one account . Good luck with your planning , be interested to read what the other forum members use . Kind Regards sherbert

I also use Telstra as there is no choice if you want coverage. The cheapest we could get was $180 for 12gb to be used within 12 months. We are on our second lot because the first was swallowed up via that virus Telstra got but denied. We just use it cause we need it and when it runs out we'll have to buy more.

I pay Telstra $24.50 a month for 3 GB on WiFi. Enough for me when I'm on the road. When at home with ADSL, I use 12 to 15 GB a month.

Thanks for the replies I hadn't considered skyping but I should imagine when away from children and grandchildren for any length of time we would want to be doing some of that. Thanks BG for you approx usage stats that helps with planning. We are looking at getting a Telstra Wi-fi 4G Advanced modem we just need to work out how much data we will need.............. I know how long is a piece of string

We have just upgraded (2 days ago) from the USB Ultimate device with 3GB to the Telstra Wi-Fi 4G Advanced modem with 4GB. We have used our 3GB one at home for over 2 years and never came close to using it all. We just pay bill, email and general looking up on the net. We don't download songs/movies etc. We also took it travelling with us. I don't expect we will use any more data but the choice was 1GB (no where near enough) 3GB, 8GB or 15GB. If you go for the 4GB at $45/month the speed will slow down if you go over your amount - you are not charged extra. Hope that helps.

Have been  on the Telstra mobile prepaid now for three years, I'm just simply amazed at the remote locations we have had service.

We don't leave home without it.

I also use Telstra Mobile prepaid, have 12 months to use it up, but every time I top up (eg; $20 or more it adds to the balance extends the total use by date......very happy with it, don't use it very much (only for phone calls or emergencies) not sure of my exact usage over time as it differs as to if I'm away on a trip or not, but suits my requirements.

If using a laptop on Wifi I use a prepaid stick.
