There is always lots of talk about fuel costs. In another thread an interesting comment was made where he stated as a full timer on the road he averaged only $35.00 dollars a week on Fuel Cost.
i was wondering what full timers average per year on fuel per week. Maybe it's not such an issue as it seems but instead it's the combined costs such as rego,insurance servicing etc.
Just paid the rego for our van, Victorian registration. $47.60 for 12 months. Our daughter had a laugh and called it our council rates. Insurance is a bit more. About $900 per year for a van valued at +$85,000 so very happy. We can't use much gas as we are still on the 8.5kg Bunnings bottle that we first used in June and it is still going. When that finishes I'll pop down to Bunnings and do a swap, $22.50 (I think) Fuel when we travel is a necessity but we do fill at the big places and splash if needed. I get about 8 kms per litre around town and down to 5 - 5.5 kms when towing.
It would depend on how many days a week/month/year you spend traveling against how long you are parked up at CP's or home or where ever..
What you need to do is work out your Kls per ltr or Ltrs per 100 how ever you want to do it multiplied by the cost per ltr and then decide what that is in relation the time you are away from home...
When we hit the road we plan on doing around 5000k in about 8 weeks and our fuel averages 5.2k per Ltr then we are parked up for the next 3-4 mths before we are back out there..
Some drive 5,000km per year, others do 35,000. Some have an aggregate mass below two tonnes, others exceed five. Some drive flat highways, others hilly back and gravel roads. That provides for a lot of variation.
Did you have a particular rig/travel scenario in mind?

i was curiuos as to what full timers on the road spend on fuel only and trying to compare that with time Regardless of type of rig, road or distance Etc.
Sure there are a lot of other costs and variables to concider overall but I was curious only about fuel averages for full time on the road members.
Haven't been full time yet.. but spent 3 to 4 weeks at a time..
Once out of the big city [Sydney] We tend to drive the first 2 or 3 days then we find a spot and stay for up to a week or so if we like it..
So far we've budgeted on $200 a week .. I think If we were full time ?? It could be half that easy??
More relaxed etc..Our vehicle is 8m motorhome 6.5 turbo diesel auto.. With full water, toilet, shower .
Black and grey water storage tanks which add weight and fuel consumption..
Generator, heating is also diesel..Which consumes VERY little..
Full time on road in a Sprinter Motorhome which averages 10L per 100km. Usually spend around $150 a week on fuel depending (obviously) on how far we travel. If we stay around a town with plenty of things to see, this fuel cost can be as low as $50-60 a week. Hope that helps a little.
Your question is, as someone said before, a bit like a piece of string.
I travel full-time, and have done so for about five years. I keep a spreadsheet of my fuel expenses. Examination of that data shows that I have averaged 22,154km each year for that time. One year may be 19,000km and another may be 25,000km. Despite that I try to only limit myself to one tank of fuel each week - ie 400km. So depending on the cost per litre at the time, just multiple 75litres by (think of a $value) and you will have my fuel cost per week.
Therefore, talking averages, I would buy about 3,450litres @ lets say $1.60/ltr = $5,520/year.
As others have said, despite limiting myself to only 400km per week, there are weeks where I will do zero Km and others when I may do 800km. I guess you could say my budget is 400km per week.

Very good answer to the man's question, very little to do with a piece of string.
I am not a full timer on the road but when I hook the caravan on for our tour my fuel use sky rockets and then when I am home the car sits in the garage with it's use being marginal but averaging out our ks over the 3 years we have had it is 14500 ks.
Add to this our other car's 7000 ks, we do about 22000 for the year, looking at our spread sheet for the 2 cars 17 cents per kilometre.
The car is petrol and the tow car is diesel, our caravan is a single axle coming in at 2000 KGS.
This year we did roughly 9000 ks with the caravan. This year with us both now retired I would think our use of the caravan will grow for next couple of years as we do a couple of longer trips and then decease back as we are in no longer wanting to rush here or there just in case it's not there next year. But I do believe our over all kilometers will not change much.
I've averaged $50 per week on fuel over 20 months, although for the past 12 of those I've been averaging a little under $40 per week. Getting a fridge helped cut my fuel bill as it reduced the frequency of going back to towns to get fresh food.
If one is on a budget decide how much you want to spend on fuel each week and as best as you can stick to it!
I am on a budget and have given myself a $100.00 per week limit on fuel, I have found that many weeks I have gone nowhere near that amount and on those weeks the left over $ get put away for the weeks that I may have to do a few more K's.

I am on the road full time but stop at places for a good time. If I like a spot I often stop for a week or so and when doing voluntary work can stop for a month or three.
The longer you are on the road full time the less you seem to travel. Ask Billeeeeeee and John etc how much fuel they have used for the last three or four months.
My last years figures are Fuel 995 litres, Kilometers traveled 5849, Cost of fuel $1554.51, average consumption 5.87 kilometers per litre for an average cost of $35.87 per week.
I travel in a 4.5t bus towing a trailer at about 1.3 tonne and travel at about 85 - 90Ks and travel mostly in VIC and SA with an occasion trip into NSW.
Depending on how you want to travel will dictate your fuel usage. I have met people with large rigs who travel from 8:00 in the morning and stop after dark every day. They say they have seen most of Australia but don't think they absorbed much but that is the way they want to travel and that's OK with me.

I agree, it's hard to determine fuel costs on an average, unless you have a passion for driving every day. There are lot's of time we would only travel 30-50klms a day, our longest trips would be from home to the ferry and back. Then we may camp for a week or two somewhere because it's such a nice place, or we have something to do there.
It will probably take a year of full time travelling to get an idea of your fuel and over all road costs.

Thats an average over 3years of $103.74 per week..
Some days when we are on the road we go through 200+ ltrs and then we can spend the next 2 weeks parked up..
Give yourself an allowance and move on each time you have enough money to get to your next destination...
