Christmas won't be quite the same

Well, folks, my absence from the forum can be explained this way. Christmas won't be quite the same this year. My poor old 92 year old Dad had a fall and broke his hip. He lasted an incredibly short 36 hours. He passed away last Thursday morning as we were packing the car for Christmas with the family. Funerals at this time of year are hard to plan so it won't happen until 30th Dec. So we celebrate without him, glad he didn't suffer too long but saddened that he won't be with us.crycry I keep reminding myself that I was fortunate to have him so long. Now I need to support my elderly Mum.

Our sincere condolences Neil and Ruth,

losing your mum or dad is never going to be easy for any of us. I know exactly how you fell and so will many of your friends here on GN's

It is good that he did not suffer. Think of all the good times, the smiling face, the rewards he gave you.

yes Christmas wont be the same this or next year. But it will get better as time goes by.

92 is a good innings, did he like the cricket? he would have been proud to see us win the ashes back.

I hope the lord gives you the strength to grieve and celebrate his life without too much heartache.

Loving thoughts to you Gerty as it is Christmas Eve.

KFT, yes he liked the cricket but would not have been happy about us winning the Ashes! Despite having lived here for most of the years since 1945, he still claimed he was a pommie and wouldn't support the Aussies!smilesmilebiggrinbiggrin

My dad died christmas eve, and you are correct, christmas is never the same.

Its a cruel time to be grieving when the whole world seems mocking your pain with cheeriness and carols.

It am sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. My Mum passed away on Mothers' Day some years ago now so I understand that it is hard when these days come around. It is great that you are there to help our Mum though and you were so lucky to have them for so long. When things settle down later on think of all the good times and the funny times - it may make it a bit easier for you.

Your father well 92 wow you were lucky to have him all these years, cherish the memories, and yes shed a tear, but he will always be in your heart, wherever he is. Our thoughts also go out to your mother who has lost her partner in life.

Neil and Ruth, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Dad had a good innings and was good that he didn't suffer.
You are both in my prayers and thoughts this Christmas. Hoping that you and your family celebrate your Dad's life with happiness and pride... sarg.x

It is your friends who will help you through this very sad time as I have found on a few occasions like this of my own.

True for me also. My darling Big Brother Passed away Saturday 21st December from lung complications after radiation therapy (he was a heavy smoker up until 2 yrs ago). 66yrs old, way too young. We also have a funeral on 30th Dec. We had our family Christmas get together the Saturday before with him and that was such a wonderful day, and during the last week we were able to say goodbye and whatever we wanted to say, so I feel lucky to have had that time with him and we were all with him at the end. I have 2 younger brothers and the 4 of us were close.

He was very much a father figure to me as we were growing up, gave me away at my wedding, took me to see the Beatles outside Southern Cross Hotel Melbourne, he was in big trouble when we got home I was all of 11yrs. he was 16.

My condolences to you Neil and Ruth, such a sad time.

My condolences to you too Judy. It's a long time to wait for the funeral but can't be helped at this time of year. Plus it allows family to get there. All the best on Monday Judy.

Thanks all. It was a nice service and nice to see the people who attended from all walks of life and various ages and who had crossed paths, worked with, socialised with my brother. It is nice to know he was so well respected and thought of.
