Just got home from enjoying the Seekers in the above concert at the Toowoomba Empire Theatre.
The venue was chock a block with over 60's and some over 90's as well. I've always been a bit ho hum about the Seekers, but after tonight I have to give them their due - they are real performers. Judith Durham was absolute magic - her voice is the same as 50 years ago and her smile just wins you over. What really did it for me was the genuine appreciation the group gave to the audience - I know all performers try to win the audience but the Seekers just bowled them over with warmth.....they were real. Second only to Gene Pitney.
If any of you old bodgies/widgies or surfies/rockers get a chance to see them - do it.
Judith Durham certainly does have an extraordinary voice. Like you, I've never been a great fan of the group or its songs but I'm sure a live performance would change that. Anyway, it certainly beats singalongs around the pianola at nursing homes hehe.
We were pretty lucky with the seating - just 2 rows from the front. I could swear the group was looking straight at us many a time as they scanned the audience. I reckon it must take quite a bit of skill to be able to make each and every member of the audience feel that it was you they were performing for. They must all be over 70 now, not bad at all. Other singers seem to lose a bit of they voice over the years and get a bit raspy - Marianne Faithful comes to mind.
