Smart phone app to recognise speed limit signs?

Hi all

I'm wondering if anyone has seen an iphone app or stand-alone product with a camera that would be pointed out through the windscreen and recognise approaching speed limit signs, and display an alert and/or sound an audible alarm. Would be handy to have as it's easy enough to miss one and not be sure of the current speed limit (and of course the sign that you do miss will be followed by kilometres of no signs at all!)

Some European cars have them built in (latest Ford Focus being an example). Have searched through the Apple app store and haven't found anything like that, and a quick stroll through Google Play brought a similar result for Android phones. I'm not a programmer but seeing all of the apps out there that use the phone's camera, I don't think it would be beyond an enterprising app developer to create one.

Any ideas?

Joe

I find my "Navlady" is reasonably accurate with displaying speed limits with a audible warning if you nudge over the limit. I NEVER rely on her only though and still like to see the actual road sign as Navlady has been known to be wrong but then again so have I.

I am not sure of anything out there to warn you of upcoming speed limits though. Navlady does tell you as you approach a change in speed limit but not sure if that is what you mean.

Our Navman alerts us with a "beep" and a pic of the sign - as well as animal crossings, school zones and lots of other road signs as well! Very handy - love it! Neve sent us to do a U turn on the Hume, unlike the last one we had, heading Melbourne to Sydney!

I am not sure if the Polaris HUD,(Heads Up Display) has an audible warning but it does project your speed onto the windscreen if front of your eyes.

Check them out at the following link.

Not a phone app but it would be right there in your eyesight.

Gps gives you the normal speed limits & a warning. With the amount of road works going on I dont think anything will keep up with the changes as some limits change several times  within the length of the work area, just saw this several times in the last week. In this case I think the best is to keep both eyes open.

I must sat that the lollypop girls in Qld are very friendly with their directions & acknoweledge you response  back to them, makes it all the more bearable.LOL

That's the main reason why I'm looking for something to alert me when approaching a physical speed limit sign, not what the GPS thinks is the current speed limit. Coming back from Brisbane on the Bruce Highway a couple of months ago we encountered supposed road works with a 40 or 60 km/h speed limit on sections of road where all of the work had clearly been done, road surface perfect and no workmen in sight, and wondering if we'd missed a sign advising end of road works.
