Get Together was held at Lazeaway Caravan park at Popanyinning instead and also Pumphries Bridge, due to being told by the Council camping was no longer allowed.

What was the undue publicity that caused it to close ??????  Could you clarify that please, nobody on GN has posted it was closed because of undue publicity ??????  Or have I missed something????

I spent some time talking to them on the phone about it and was told it was due to the concerns about third party insurance and their insurer would not cover them for camping (falling trees etc).

Wombat, did the person who mentioned to you Yornaning Dam was closed to camping (which was the reason I contacted the Council in the first place to find out if that was the case) mention anything about "undue publicity" being the reason?

 I saw some comments on another forum and an extract of my GN forum post borrowed from here which I think MH may be referring to, and comments on that about websites and camping publications contributing to the impression it is a free camping site.  Our Cuballing Pub lunch was cancelled due to us not camping at Yornaning with the further distance to travel from Popanyinning CP site (approx. 20 kms), however I think everyone would agree the Pingelly Pub meal was a great success.   There is no CP in the town of Cuballing but the CP at Popanyinning comes within their shire.  

Yornaning was still listed with Camps 7 as an overnight camping spot (after being told by the Council it was only a day site I notified the Camps editor of this) when I was arranging the GTG.  I then changed the venue, however a visit by members during our Popanyinning GTG just gone said there was still no sign that said "No Camping".   In fact three RV's (a campervan, motorhome and caravan) had camped there overnight without being challenged or asked to move on according to those spoken to by our GN day visitors.  

I find it difficult to understand if the Council is saying one thing publicly but privately allowing it (which I assume would allow them to deny any responsibility if a camper was injured etc), however not having a "No Camping" sign there would make a good challenge in court for any claim I would imagine.   It may be they just don't have the staff or resources to police no camping at the dam, but surely a sign saying "No Camping" would make the status of the dam area clear to users who visit dam that it is not an overnighter, it just doesn't make sense.

I notice from Council records that the Dam has a past history of vandalism and theft (hooning and drunken behaviour, doors stolen off the toilets, BBQ door smashed and gas bottle stolen etc etc).    At a guess I would venture to speculate that having campers there illegally or otherwise would deter this type of behaviour and thefts as the perpetrators would not want their vehicle details recorded and reported and could not get away with this conduct while being observed.  

Perhaps it is a case of not officially condoning camping while on the other hand responsible illegal campers are providing a form of free site security just by being there to deter these acts from happening.   Seems a bit of a conundrum for the Council in that respect. 

While I sympathise with the Council's predicament, any "undue publicity" is of their own doing, and I more than sympathise with the travelling community because of the mixed messages they are getting from the council regards use of the dam area, they have to bear some of the responsibility for the confusion (no signs, ignoring campers by council staff visiting the dam etc, etc).
