Wandering Caravan Park, Wandering WA

Wandering Caravan Park is 120 kms south east of Perth.  During Mon to Friday bookings are made at the Shire Office which also doubles as the town Post Office.  On weekends or after hours you book at the local hotel, but bear in mind that it doesn't open until midday, although you can choose your site before then.  If you require a toilet before you book in there are very modern and clean toilets in the main street.

The cost is $22 a night for a powered site with a $50 deposit on the key to the ablution block (free washing machine) and a new camp kitchen that boasts reverse cycle airconditioning and a 40 inch TV with dish satellite coverage, as well as being fully equipped with the usual appliances including a full size chefs stove.  The CP is opposite the old sports ground which is only used now for fairs/shows etc as there is a new oval in town.  Although the grounds are gravel and no grass, it is value for money.  See pic's below.

There is a card system self serve fuel pumps in the main street which are council owned and have Perth prices for fuel.

A visit to the Tanglefoot Winery café on the western approach to town is highly recommended, the meals are first class and reasonably priced, google Tanglefoot for more info, opening hours etc.

Vic, that would have to be THE worst looking "Camp Kitchen" I have ever seen mate. I wouldn't even let a dazelled wombat within cooee of that, for fear of contamination.

I disagree Doug, have seen many that are absolutely awful. Air-con, a TV, big stove with an oven, and all clean, wow!

Looks as if they are really making an effort Duh, obviously in a very dry area. The $50 deposit for the key sounds a bit much but you get it back.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip.

I think Doug's comments are tongue in cheek Gerty, like saying "fully sick", we could cook wombat in the oven it was that big, there were six gas hotplates on the stove.   The $50 key deposit may seem a bit high but there is no caretaker on site and the area can be accessed by anyone who drives in and there is a lot of valuable stuff in the campers kitchen.   The key fits both the campers kitchen and ablution block door locks which also has a free washing machine.

The council told me they are building a new ablution block soon to replace the old one.   The showers are gas heated and are great.

If you and Bryan have the funds to give yourself a treat in Wandering, check out the Tanglefoot Café winery on the highway on the western side just before you get into town, the food and sweets are to die for.   All the locals use the café too.  See;

http://tanglefootwines.blogspot.com.au/

I believe the pub isn't much good for food anymore since new owners took it over, but I can't vouch for that, just info given to us from the locals.  The pub does however sell some small items such as milk, bottled water etc  which are in a small fridge near the bar.

There is no shop in Wandering I am aware of, so make sure you take your own supplies.   The water at the caravan park from the park tap is ok to drink as is the water in the camp kitchen (town water supply).

No need to be sorry GD, no problem at all, maybe I should have put a smiley face at the end.

Now, as to the dazelled wombat, well I just don't want that great kitchen contaminated smile

I'ts a great state Brian and Cheryl, I have only scratched the surface of things to see, have been around the block a few times but not a lot in our own backyard, so just concentrating on that now.

There are many on here who have given the state a good going over (eg; blaze, Dunmowins, Loki, Yeoeleven etc) and can all give good feedback.

Depending on what type of weather you are happy to tolerate, but basically for the fine weather north of Carnarvon in April/May and south of Canarvon in September/October onwards.   The weather can be pretty unpredictable as it seems to be all over Oz at the moment, so that is just generally.   Hope your current travels are going well, all of our states have their good points and SA is one of my favourites too. smile

I'll be spending a weekend in Wandering hopefully soon. In the meantime I'm clearing out the junk in my sheds before I take the apart and build a carport for the motorhome.

After that I plan to take a 4 day long weekend once a month to explore my back yard.

Thank you Duh for posting that info. We are currently gathering as much info about WA as we can start to loosely planing our two year trip to that state. The more people we talk to the more we are looking forward to our trip there. All things being equal we should be getting underway early March.

once again, thanks for you posts that have been more than helpful in making our plans.

Safe travels and enjoy the journey ( which I am sure you are)

Brian and Cheryl

Good luck with your shed Bryan and the new motorhome carport.

One tip on the current ablution block at Wandering (being replaced soon).  There are 4 metal doors to the block, two are male and female toilets, one is for a separate shower and one is a combined shower room with a washing machine.  All are padlocked with sliding padbolts.

However, the doors have dropped and it is very difficult to line up the bolts to slide them into the bolt holes even putting upwards pressure on the doors to do so when bolting or unbolting the doors.   I overcame this by finding a flat piece of wood in the grounds and slid this under a gap under the doors on the cement floor and stepping on the overhanging end to raise the door to the bolt hole level to lock or unlock the padbolts.  I was going to mention this to the council when I returned the key for my deposit but forgot to do so, so imagine it may still be the same.

The same key fitted the campers kitchen doors which were not a problem.
