I for one would never claim to have seen Australia if that didn't include Tassie. I know a couple of photographers on Red Bubble who absolutely adore the place. Incidentally, Blaze, one of those photographers now lives in Derby not far from Broome (and also loves the Kimberley).

so much for all the knockers of Tassie and the free camping disappearing, this is a must read. On top of this new location you have free camping on the river bank with toilets about 2 km away. Then head to the iconic Stanley and you will find free camping along the beach front (about 1km from a c/p) and free camping on the Stanley wharf about 300 meters from the C/p. That's without the other 40 or 50 spots in the shire that I can think of. Then there is the cheap camping in the reserves. So for those that complain about the cost of travel on the spirit of Tasmania would do well to remember that the cost is more than evened out in a month long stay by the acessability to free and cheap camping. Smithton is my home town and always will be, currently in broome
Nice to hear a positive story Blaze, instead of the constant diet of doom and gloom peddled by some.
Must be plenty of stories like this around, for some reason people prefer to whinge about the negatives, wonder how long it will take for someone to attempt to turn this thread around?
Your right Blaze, the cost of the Spirit to take your van across to Tassie sure out ways the free camping spot there,Tassie is so beautiful, and we are very fortunate to be able to free camp in so many places around the Island, no body should moan about that.
My sister and partner just completed a tour of Tassie. They were most impressed with the north west. As I recall there is a dump point at the toilet block near the wharf at Stanley...

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
there is also a free dump point on the opposite side of the river to the boat ramp in Smithton near the Bridge Hotel which also serves a good counter meal at realistic prices
cheers
