I have RACV Total Care which covers my Landy and the van. Costs me $178 per year. The cost is determined by the number of years you have been a member.
I consider it excellent coverage as I travel full-time.
It is also supported by the Motoring Organisations in each state as well - NRMA,RACQ etc.
Being Victorians, we are considering RACV total care for roadside assistance cover, for the van and tug. Would be interested to know if you think it necessary and if there are "better" covers available?
I have RACV Premium cover and just got the renewal notice today, $356.99 but am going to question that before I pay up the hard earn't as it is a lot dearer than should be for some reason.

We have the van insured with Racv and the little Suzuki. The Bt50 was too expensive to insure with RACV. I phoned today, they said $178 would cover the Suzuki, Bt50 and caravan for roadside cover???
We have NRMA premium cover and have used it once and I would now not tour without it.
the service and support for just about anything that causes a problem was no hassle whatever.
NRMA have a higher level of cover if you have a rig up to 10tonne called premium plus.
I have no idea what RACV have.

We are with you.... used it once, but they were soo good!
We were west of Merriwa on the Golden Hwy when we had a problem with the car, they towed us (car+ van+ dogs) into Dubbo where the nearest dealership was, parked us up in a van park for the night, came back next morning for the car when the dealership was open, organised a hire car, and called us every day to see we were OK... they also called the dealership everyday to make sure we weren't getting stuffed around.
We won't leave home without NRMA premium assist.
"Normal" cover would have had them tow the car back to Merriwa, leave the van by the roadside, and leave us to fend to ourselves.

I intend to upgrade to premium care too with NRMA once I hit the road full time. I ain't as dare devil as I useta was when I was a kid. One time in my first car, an old Morris Oxford, I ran outta juice and pushed the car across an intersection into a servo where I searched under all the rubber mats and in the boot and found 11 pence hehe - enough to buy about a quarter of a gallon. It got me home though.
regardless of cost it is a must. I haven't lived in Tasmania for almost 10 years but have maintained my ultimate cover, they accept my vehicles are registered in NSW.
Something to note is RAC covers the person regardless of what they are driving. NRMA only covers a nominated vehicle.
With NRMA Premium care coverage if you van weighs in excess of 2 tonnes it is not covered for roadside assist, you have to pay an extra cost to cover it. Below is a Q&A from their web site, Rod
5. Does my NRMA Membership cover my caravan or trailer? If the nominated vehicle towing the caravan is covered by our Premium Care or Traveller Care package and the caravan or trailer is not over 2 tonnes, it will be covered for Roadside Assistance.
With Premium Care or Traveller Care your caravan or trailer is also covered for free towing up to 50km in metropolitan areas, up to 100km in remote areas and in country areas, back to the town of the attending NRMA Country Service Centre or 50km free towing in any direction.

we have the top cover with RACQ. It is called the ULTIMATE cover, and it covers everything including the van. We also get car hire free accomm. plus return of van and tow to home plus bus or train travel back home.
What a wonderful way to spend $180. for less than a cup of coffee a week why would you not be a member in one of the great motor road side assist companies.
I did not even look for any other company, as we have now been with RACQ for eions and are a gold member.
When we had the old tow we would have been up for a fortune if not for the RACQ. Plus of course they are totally affiliated with the other State bodies NRMA RACV etc etc.
Also, we replaced the battery with a RACQ item and 18 months later the battery failed and they replaced the battery ... no charge..
Try and get that from a battery retailer.
RACQ is one of the MUST have when caravanning. ( or sister companies)
