Hi Mike, I stumbled across this site a few weeks ago, and there was a property listed not too far from where we live. It has a waterfront location and we thought it might be a nice spot for a camp with the kayaks, so we visited the property and were made very welcome and shown the camping area, all good. We will take the van out there, probably in the new year. I think it's a great idea and we'll certainly be referring to the site's listings on our travels. As you said, it's early days yet so hopefully many more properties will take up the idea. Cheers, Annie
Thanks MikeC - the concept sounds great. I have a niggling suspicion that if an accident or something untoward happens at a site that it would be a lawyers picnic, and no, I'm not knocking this concept....just looking at it with open eyes.
If licensed caravan park owners complain about having to pay insurance, rates, GST to maintain their sites imagine what they'll do when they discover joe blow can rent his backyard out. We've seen how they try and prevent councils from offering free camping to travellers.
Hmmm, had a quick look at this site this morning and I was able to log into what they call the free area, just had another look and I find I have to sign in with my email address and create a password, now my idea of free is just that it's free, when a site want's my email address in my book it is not free.

My thoughts exactly Denis, I suspect the legal implications will be the schemes Achilles heel.
Like you I had contemplated the reaction from caravan park owners, once they get wind of the scheme I suspect they will come out with all guns blazing, individual property owners will be sitting ducks, if they cant shut them down they will certainly ensure they obey the letter of the law.
When has the Big End of Town ever discouraged Monopolys?....its a hugely profitable market edge if you can get away with it and sustain it..before ACCC or similar comes snooping....monopolys always create larger profits from the rareified air that monopolys create.....I have been advocating this concept for years...yes there will be many hurdles placed in this concept's way both by vested interests directly and vested interest through Council..I've been in business long enough to see/appreciate the way Australian business is now conducted.....the day crapp is worth money, poor people will be born without bumholes.....I used to live in a Country Town which had two Hotels with of course Liquor Licences.....guess what one Hotel bought the other Licence/Hotel when it came up for sale..no competition meant there was only one entity to supply local Sporting Clubs etc and worse their meals deteriorated and increased in price.....too far to another Town not to patronise and they knew it....Monopolys and vested interests never help the Consumer...
The fact is that many Caravan Parks are not catering for the Grey Nomad demographic groups...they are foisting what they want that demographic group to accept including their fees, at the same time as many Caravan Parks are progressively reducing the numbers of powered sites and replacing with cabin sites...and many not upgrading as they await the Developers call for their sites....either way it will prove a poor result for the travelling public....particularly as 'self contained' rigs become more the norm.......I have been involved with many Caravan Parks in my former lives both as a Bank Manager and also a Certified Business Broker selling them....for 42 years....
This concept will prove successful because it is the only way/direction, that this specific demographic group can go...Insurance will be put up as among the biggest barrier, it always is, and there is more than a casual vested interest in large Caravan Park Cartels/ownerships.....
It only needs a 'Clive Palmer' type entrepreneur to cut through all the "bull" and marshall farmers/Landowners ,adjoining Country Towns and Citys throughout Australia to take on Councils/Vested Interest Caravan Parks and we will see this concept expanded/improved upon...why?..simply because its needed, and eventually even vested interests break ranks and join the new concepts in the name of profit.....because most Travellers I've met are prepared to pay their way...i.e. a reasonable tariff for reasonable facilities..not extortion fees because of Monopolys paying for services they will never need or use.......
I suggest it's not a matter of if, but when?.......common sense prevails.....Baby Boomers will demand it through correct representation....watch this space....Hoo Roo

CMCA are in the process setting up a scheme just like this for their members.
Over 30 years ago the Caravan Club in the UK had campsites all over Britain for overnight stays on farms etc, you had to be fully self contained and it worked very well we stayed at quite a few during our travels, the Caravan Club was a very big organisation they even had their own caravan parks.
Twenty five years ago there was a private company here in Australia that was organising stays on private properties, we stayed on one property in Kew in NSW for a week, I don't think they lasted very long probably councils shut the scheme down thru imposing onerous conditions or denying permission.
Cheers
