Diesel Tuning Chip

We have a Holden Colorado 3litre diesel and my husband is considering installing a "Chip my Diesel" performance chip. Has anyone done this and is it a good or bad idea. Thanks

I installed a DP Chip in my Hilux some years ago and I was amazed at the increase in power and torque when towing the van.  At one time, I had to have it adjusted and ran with it disconnected for a day or so.  I couldn't believe the 'loss' of power.  There are a few on the market to choose from.  The DP Chip is marketed by Berrima Diesel and that sold me on that model.  I know the DP Chip made no diffference to any vehicle warranty.

I installed a Chipit diesel Chip to our 09 3lt Colorado and the improvement is impressive around 30%. We pull a 2500kg Heritage and live on Mt Tamborine QLD 1500m.

On our trip around Aus with the Colorado loaded we averaged 15.3lt/100km over 22,000km. We have towed the van over Mt Hotham (1861Mt)with ease. I have found that there is less stress and fatigue in driving as you know that you have the power to go almost any where. If you plan to do some serious mileage then do it, I can assure you you will not regret it. If you would like a copy of the graph showing the increase in torque, send me your Email address to w.anderson@hunterlink.net.au.

Are these chips much the same or do some perform better than others?

I put one in our 2010 Holden Colorado for towing our 19' Coromal made very easy work of it averaged 16ltrs to the 100 so I suppose its up to your budget from memory it was $1500 fitted and that's a lot of diesel, but I think it was worth it.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like it might be the way to go. Gaz"n"Rox you say yours was $1500 fitted, the one my husband is looking at is about $500 not including fitting, why such a difference in cost - is a matter of you get what you pay for?

The price of the chips do vary in price the cheap ones around $200 tend to only increase the common rail pressure where as the more expensive $8-900 change the timing and fuel mixture to met the demands of your driving. I spent $990 on my Chipit and feel I got a fairly good deal. I personally would not pay $1500 just for a chip.

Not a modification I would consider, I understand engine economy and power can be increased, however IMO more power (if used) equates to more wear and tear and shorter engine life, of course if you don't use the extra power why carry out the modification.

The 2.4litre diesel in our transit is not exactly beast, however it has more than enough for its intended purpose.

Just my thought.smile

I guess it adds more turbo boost and adjusts timing / fuel accordingly ??
Strange as it may seem ?? more power on a diesel can mean less rpm ..
Modern turbo's have variable vane tech which can be tuned better than std..
