Filling water tanks

hmm

Hi everyone, hope everyone is having a great time exploring this great big beautiful country of ours. We are just wondering if anyone can help us, we are wondering where we can fill our water tank up when we are free camping, we are trying not to have to go into a caravan park for this sort of thing. We have only recently started out on our trip but have been going from one rellie  to another so have not worked this problem out yet. Please help

Check the info centres as they sometimes let you, Julie, if not them they will point you in the right direction. Maybe even check a local park but you would probably need a multi ended tap key, good to have on board anyway, available from Bunnings or similar places. I always use an in-line filter as well when filling the tank or even when a hose is connected to the Avan.

Hi well you search for previous posts,,, but here goes.

Visitor Centres in most places tell you where to get potable (drinking) and non potable water,,, as do

service stations

shops, especially bakeries (enjoy a pie while there)

people in the street,,,, all you ahve to do is ask.

There is a tool you can buy in Bunnings for vandal proof taps (they have special heads to stop anyone just walking by and leaving them running).

Beware AND THEN PROMPTLY IGNORE SOME WHO SAY YOU ARE THIEVING WATER,,, if you ask for it and locals willing to help,,, go for it.

Never had a problems and over 3 years full time on the road.

If someone is kind enough to offer to let you fill up at their home or farm or whatever take them up on the offer but do remember to give them something for their kindness, as you will know from your own water accounts it is not that cheap anymore.

Marj, Super Cheap Auto or BCF have a reasonable one for under $30 OR a good CV accessary shop will have real good ones for around $100. The one I have has normal garden hose fittings both ends. Keep in mind, like everything, you get what you pay for. Good hunting.

Just remembered, I was told to wrap cling wrap twice around the filter and store in the bottom of the fridge if not being used. This stops bacteria growing inside the filter, sounded reasonable to me, so I do that.

OK if looking for water filters,,, I can tell you one thing,,,

Look at the initial cost,,, AND THEN THE REPLACEMENT FILTER COST,,, as this can be a real issue.

As an example I used Everpure previously,, brillaint filters, twist lock easy on/off,,,, cost of replacement filter (activated charcoal for drinking water) is $100-130 depending where you buy them and they are now harder to get. I used to use 2-3 per year when on the road full time (we bush camp) and filter water before tanks also.

At the Adealide van/boat show last year I converted to another system $75 initial cost with 2 filter cartridges (activated charcoal)  BUT HERe'S THE BEST part - the replacement cartridges are about $16-24 depending on where you buy them.

Usually marine dealers charge more as they are taxed higher on some goods,,, so shop around, and here's a start to look at some, by no means all.

http://www.ebay.com.au/bhp/replacement-water-filters

Look to a common type filter cartridge that can be changed easily and purchased from hardware and plumbing shops (as others have said also),,, if price good buy 4 or so for any trips out bush.

we use these filters found them on ebay supplied by Clarence water filters work for us.

Caravan in line water filter AIC-K 5 Micron Granular Activated Carbon filter with KDF Media for high flow and volume.

Filter has brass quick connect clip on hose fittings making it ideal for use in-line on water supply to caravans or for filling water tanks on caravans. Also ideal to use as a portable filter around the house.

Activated Carbon reduces Chlorine, Bad Taste, Odours, Dirt, Rust, Algae, Sediment and the KDF media helps neutralises Chlorine and reduces the chance of bacteria growth in the filter extending the life of the filter.

Pressure rated at 125 psi Service life up to 6000 litres or 12 months

Flow rate up to 20 Lpm so it can be used on vans with showers. (the slower that water is filtered the longer contact time in the filter which will remove the highest level of contaminates) Cable ties are supplied with the filter.

Hose fittings can be unscrewed and reused.

Filter Will Replace - SHURflo 6" and 10", 94-009-50, RV-10 (some filters have different fittings, contact us if this is the case.)

Filters are available with the fittings or without the fittings in the product options.

We bought a ''Bucket'' of clips and fittings from the caravan show here in Brisbane on Sunday...

The clips are for rolling up the end of your annex that hangs over the end and turns it into a ''gutter''.....You hang the bucket at the end which comes with the fittings needed..then hook your hose onto it and place into your water filling station.....WHALLA.....A tank full of clean water in no time (even better if it rains...lol)

We normally ask at info centres and always offer to pay.

Cheers
