When vandals move out, grey nomads move in

I'm referring to an article in the Lifestyle/Nomad News section of thegreynomads.com.au

As a resident of Logan, I'd like to comment on the particular sites that the council is talking about.

Hugh Muntz Park, no, unless they sort out the said 'graffiti, vandalism and loitering. It's right in Beenleigh and close to a busy s/c and next to the Pacific Highway.

The Beenleigh Historical Village could be a good spot. It's a very interesting place, plus you can get a meal and entertainment there. It would also be good for their coffers too.

I thought the Beenleigh Showgrounds already had something in place because I've seen caravans in there.

Logan River Parklands would be nice, as long as they don't mean the boat ramp section, because that's too close to the Pacific Highway. I go walking in the Parklands because it's flat, peaceful, shaded in spots and close to the river. I've seen people fishing there, don't know if they catch anything. It's handy to Beenleigh but just far enough away.

Tully Memorial Park might be good, mainly because it's not in suburbia.

Underwood Park would be an excellent spot if you needed to be handy to Brisbane inner suburbs etc. As they say location location location.

Of course, they've been talking about this idea for yonks so no telling how long it will take them to decide.

But will the vandals move out? Wouldn't like to freedom camp if they were still around.

Lived in Logan for 10 years.  I would happily FREEDOM camp at Tully Park.  Caravans have been staying there overnight for years.

Yes, I noticed Beth54 mentioned that one as a good one. So I wonder why they are thinking of the other one?

Tully Park has not been an official overnight stay, I think in Camps AW it is only lists as a day use camp.  Up until when we hit the road in 2011 the gates were locked at night, so perhaps a feeling of safety.

I contact the Logan City Council some 6 months ago, to see what progress has been made.
AFTER GETTING THE RUN AROUND, IT APPEARED THAT NO ONE KNEW WHAT i WAS REFERRING TO.
IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE AT LEAST 4 TO 5 FREE CAMPS IN lOGAN AS IT WOULD BOOST THE ECONOMY ...ooops sorry re large type.

a real bonus to grey nomads who want to visit the total region.
But I would not count on it happening soon.

I may follow up with my councillor Mr L. Smith when we get back home from our trip to visit family in Melbourne,
All for Free Camping, not just because of the cost saving, but the lifestyle and company it offers.

A thing that a lot of people forget about these camp sites close to major cities is that they are often used by country people who have to travel to the city for regular medical treatment.

I lived very close to a rest stop on the north of Brisbane for about 10 years and I regularly visited to talk to the campers as I seeked info before buying my first bus.

Many were repeat stayers as they were getting radiation etc and the camp site was close to the railway station so they could easily travel into the hospitals etc. They also patronised the many small shops whilst there.

Do gooders decide to relocate all the homeless people there and gave them tents and came every Sunday with a free feed and a church sermon ( the sermon kept them alive LOL).

These people quickly turned the site into a rubbish dump and harassed all the travelers and many stopped coming. The rabble smashed everything and then the council reduced the site to day only and when I left it was just a dump point and not many people called in. Many of the businesses stated they relied on the tourist to survive and many were closing when I left.

Regards
Brian

I was also thinking of out of towners going for hospital appointments. There's a train station in Beenleigh and a bus route near Underwood Park.

It's also not far from Beenleigh to the Australian Outback Spectacular at Oxenford or even the northern end of the Gold Coast. Not that I'm promoting either one of these, but I know some people have come to the region for that reason.

If Nomadic1 is reading this, I'm sorry, I didn't know about the Beenleigh Showgrounds when you visited, but I think it was nicer at Jacobs Well CP anyway, not counting the bities.
