Better to sell privately, maybe midway between the prices, so you gain and the buyer gains, so add $ 7000-8000, then see how you go.

Kantiki, we know exactly how you feel we decided to upgrade our 8mth old van for another. It's like anything you buy walk out of the store or yard and it depreciates instantaneously. countryroad is right put it out on the open market at price you would be happy to haggle a little at. We could have done that ourselves but after dealing with the public for so many years it was easier for us to lose a little and hopefully gain a lot. What ever happens hope it works out for you. smile

Back in 2002 we wanted to update our van to a 16' poptop, our 3 choices were Jayco, -- A-van -- and Olympic, the $$$$$ between them was only 2 - 3 hundred and all vans were pretty similar, standard 16' poptops We preferred the Jayco [ just ? ] But they only offered $1500 trade-in on our 14 ft 1990's Viscount Avan offered $6500 and Olympic offered $6700. needless to say that made Jayco way to dear so they missed out, Going on market prices I thought a fair private sale price would have been around the $8000, But done the trade with Avan, and was happy with it up to when I traded it in on a Lotus 19' full van with full Ensuite in 2011

The point I am trying to make here is from my experience, Jayco are not really interested in Trade-ins ?? To be $ 5000 difference to the others was ridiculous ??

we lost a S***** load when we sold our motor home ,and that was private.. confuse

and ours was only 3 years old with bugger all on the clock.. furious

Anyone ever checked to see when the rapid depreciation levels out? Or similar with comparison between vans and motorhomes?

You bet with us it equated to $1000 per month but you learn to suck up the disappointment and move on to bigger and better things biggrin should have tried to hire a similar van like our first to see what you like/dislike, would have been cheaper maybe??

It is sobering to encounter that level of depreciation at a time when we are being told that van and motorhomes sales are increasing through growing demand.

Back in the seventies and early eighties when I was prone to moving my van on when it was under 3 years old, I do not recall depreciation ever being so high. Then I preferred 22', Viscount or Millard, and set up for two - so you might have expected more of a discount.

Maybe like cars the re-sale market is generally poor, except for just a few particular brands and models which hold their value better and for good reasons, a car example is the 4 cylinder Camry. A caravan example is..? A motorhome example is...? For motorhomes that probably depends more on the base vehicle.

You seem to have to be in the right spot for your buyer.

And stick around long enough for the one who will buy to decide ' I'll look for a van or whatever today "

I'm maybe shopping tomorrow and I'm hoping he's in a dreadful hurry to get rid of it so I get a good buy.

My brother sold his caravan about 5 years old for about what they paid. Prices of new vans were up and his was very well maintained, Mr Sheen'd regularly.

A private sale, guess there would have been extras that had been fitted and added over the time. Now they have the toilet, shr and washing machine and the van to carry them in and the bigger tug to transport them.

I listed my 10 year old Jayco Westport on Ebay just on 2 years ago now.
Started it at 99 cents with what I thought was a fair reserve.
Had literally thousands of lookers and over a hundred watchers over the 10 days of the auction.
There was a core of very keen bidders in the last couple of minutes and it ended up selling for around eight thousand dollars more than the reserve, and over a grand more than the sum of what I had paid and spent on modifications to it.
Just got to be lucky I guess.
