Best reversing camera.

Gday everyone, I am new to the GreyNomads.com.au and as you can tell from my user name I/we are deaming of purchasing a new caravan in 2014. We have taken the first step of becoming Grey Nomads and purchased a brand new Mazda BT-50 XTR and set it up for towing. As it is a real bugger to reverse we thought that we should set it up with a reversing camera. What I would like to know from some of you experienced Grey Nomads out there is, what is the best type/brand of reversing camera that would suit my BT-50 and that could be fully integrated for use on our future caravan.

  • Also can you tell me is the windscreen rear view mirror screen or the dash board monitor is the best.
  • Is hard wired or wireless the best.

I have had both wireless and hard wired, forget the wireless type to much interference ,I have had a hard wired one for about 7years wich I bought at the Melbourne Caravan Show of Safety Dave ,fitted it myself easy to fit two camera,s all leads, and monitor ,around $400.00 dollar mark.

I bought my set up from here

www.precisionvision.com.au/

Not cheap by any means but really a cut above the rest

Been running the heavy duty truck/bus cameras from Jaycar, very sturdy units with infrared for night vision, audio as well if you like.

Running  these through a DVD monitor which can take three cameras.

Have just set up the same camera with a Jaycar DVD monitor in the new truck & all is working well.Reasonably priced.

Got mine from Autobarn for about $220 fitted.  As I have a BT 50 ute with alloy canopy on the back, only have limited visibility.

It was worth the money to me to make sure I don't reverse over anyone.

I have had our rear view camera fitted now for about two and a half years with no hassles. Used the hard wired type as the radio one suffe from too much interference. I settled on a monitor that clips on the rear view mirror  so it's a natural place to look when driving.  When it's powered off it works like a normal mirror, works for me.

I said on an old post that I didn't use towing mirrors when towing. I still don't use them, as I have a camera on the back of the van.
Told by a member of SAPOL at a conference on towing and tow vehicles that as long as you have clear vision down both sides of the towed unit extra mirrors are not required. Now I see that a grey nomad member says "a friend" was find $250 for not having mirrors on herein South Australia. Hmmm me thinks I will need to do some more research into the law regarding this. I don't want to donate my $$$ to such a worthy cause. I will get back when I find out who's right. If I can get any sense out of the "authorities"

My prado has windscreen rear view mirror screen. I wish it didn't! It's very dark On the rear view on the road, but a great camera!

cheers,

Hi deamon 14 and welcome to the forum
There are a wide variety of rear view cameras out there and as stated the jaycar ones are good and reasonably priced but there are a number of Australian sellers on ebay with a guy named Dave in Melbourne he is very reliable and has good prices.

A couple of points to consider from my experience don't waste your money on wireless ones and you should consider one with the lowest angle of view as the 90+ degree ones do not give as good a depth of field, my camera is a sony which i have been using for past 8 or 9 years.
It is also worth fitting one to the back of tug if not already there as makes reversing up to van much easier, also ensure that the screen you use will accept input from more than one camera.
