Tasmanian Western Exporer closed until about March 2014

The Western Explorer Road in the State's North West  will remain closed and unsafe for vehicles for at least the next 5 months.

The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources is aware that this is a significant closure for an important regional  tourist route but the damage caused by the recent  landslip is so significant that its prolonged closure is unavoidable.

The area has been assessed by geo-technical experts and their recommendations are that given the size and nature of the slip that  major rehabilitation work is required to make the road safe again for vehicles.

DIER is aware that this will inconvenience many tourists and local businesses but the safety of workers and travellers has to take precedence.

There has been a previous landslip in the same area along the picturesque road, so there is a clear need to develop a sustainable long term solution, that takes into account the topography and environmental sensitivity of the area.

The design and construction of the remediation has been given priority but given its magnitude it will by necessity to take some time.

In order to give travellers adequate forward notice for changes in their journey, detour points and signage have been established in the North, at Balfour and at the Southern end, at Corinna.

Motorists are asked to obey all signage and directions and to drive to the conditions,  to ensure their own  safety, and that of DIER contractors working to repair damaged infrastructure.

See my earlier posting on "Touring Tasmania"

How many threads are we going to open on Tasmania?

No it's a failure of this site.

Current postings and threads should go back to the top, this would stop people continually posting the same thing, day after day. eg. Touring Tasmania and asking for advice.

Not worried about the weather, in fact it's been quite nice, but we are off to Singapore and a twenty one day cruise next Tuesday.

But thanks for your concern.

Ken
