Computer Problem

I am running Windows 7 on my laptop with 2 user profiles - (Self as Admin & wife).

I did a 'defrag' and now I have lost my profile as admin. - wife's profile is still accessible and I can get to all files etc, but my profile does not appear. Result is I cannot make any changes as I was administrator and can not log in.

I have recovery discs, but once again need 'admin' approval to use them.

I am computer savvy, but this has me beat - any suggestions???????

Thanks

Patto

Gday...

Not too pooter savvy meself ... but me son (who is) says to try this -

Restart into safe mode, it'll give you administrator access... Then create a new user as admin and use that as your own. Copy the profile of your old account to your new account or just start fresh

I recommend opening cmd prompt and running chkdsk with all the flags except the ones that skip tests. Run the chkdsk thing from cmd window and see if the results show bad sectors...It'll show bad sectors no doubt ... Backup as much as possible and get a new hard drive - then boot from the recovery CDs. Suggest Solid State Drive instead of regular type HDD as they obviously move their laptop around while its on ...

www.ramcity.com.au can help them with buying and installing a SSD - they are really helpful

Hope that helps hmm

Cheers - John

If you can boot into safe mode you could try restoring to a "restore point" dated prior to your defrag and all should be as it was.

saved me a few times when I have been fiddling.

From your Wifes account, go to control panel and users. You should see both accounts there, if not recreate the admin one.

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of them worked.
It keeps asking for a log on to my profile which no longer exists.
I can't even get into the 'registry'. Safe mode still asks for password and log on for my old profile.
Restore is the same.

Thanks,
Patto

Patto, google "how to restore deleted administrator account in windows 7" if you haven't already. There are a few different links there.

Hi all,
Troopy, I checked google as suggested but to no avail. It did however give me a few clues. I managed to get into 'regedit' and find the profile but was unable to delete it.

Milo, thanks for the suggestion, but I was unable to make any changes or updates, as you need 'admin' approval. ie. log on as administrator.

The good news is that a 'friendly computer tech' had a program which was able to access the file and delete my profile, then create a new one. All is good now, although I have a few bookmarks.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
