Hi Mumsy, with regards to rear view cameras I did a fair bit of testing and came to the conclusion that the role of the camera is to allow you to keep an eye on what's in close, say 300 to 400 meters. Your mirrors are a better thing to use for the long range stuff, better resolution, etc. hope that helps, I have found that after three years on the road it works for me.

Mumsy we have been looking for the same thing for some time. I don't kow if it needs to be as tight as 90 but the standard one that is only meant for reversing is not good enough for me either.If you find one could you post the info here please.

smile Have to agree with Briche on this one!. Rear view cameras are REVERSING cameras and should be regarded as such. I believe it is illegal to use them as a rear view surviellance switched on all the time whilst travelling. Having said that, my camera system IS on full time and is used in a supplemental role to my mirrors when travelling

Me too, Bob. Supplemental to the mirrors. The camera is great for reversing though even if whatever's behind you does look larger than life. You get used to it after a while.

I use heavy duty truck/bus camera's from Jaycar on the van & tug, I can run them full time & are very good. Infrared for night vision & audio if you wish.

Hi, I have a three way set up. One low down above & behind the tow hitch for connecting. This only comes into play when in reverse gear & uses its own screen. The other two are; one on the top op the canopy & the other on the caravan. These are on permanently. Just switch between them as needed. They have their own screen which has a scale on it so you can judge distance. "Response" brand from Jaycar. The one on the canopy supplements the outside mirrors as the internal rear vision is useless. Cameras can not be used instead of mirrors.

I like them because I do not like the close in blind spot you get with a caravan i.e. 3-5 metres no matter what mirrors I've tried. Bill

I initially started out with a 120 degree camera and have now changed over to a 90 degree sony that I purchased on ebay from a guy in Melbourne for about $100 it gives much better distance vision and coupled with mirrors provides a good level of safety I travel with the rear view camera on all the time.
