After a recent discussion with a friend about reversing techniques, I thought I'd bring my nomad friends into it.
One friend was taught (in NZ, if that makes any difference) to turn with your left arm over the seat and looking to the rear. Although she can also park with mirrors.
Another friend is absolutely hopeless at reversing. I don't know how she got her licence without being able to do it at least half way correct. Although that was in Bendigo over 40 years ago, so maybe they were of the old school of near enough is good enough. Other than this reversing issue, she's a very good driver.
I have a brief look over my right shoulder and do the rest by the mirrors. Constantly checking the inside mirror and the two outside mirrors, which are those silly concave or whatever type. It took me a long time to get used to them.
This is not about reversing to hook up. Just reversing into a parking spot or whatever.
So how do you reverse?

I used to be good at reversing with mirrors, now the reversing camera and that lovely big screen with lines means I do not have to be any more.
In all seriousness, I think reversing cameras are a bit like pay wave in supermarkets, one is helping me forget how to reverse, the other is helping me forget the PIN for my credit card.
Believe me I do not need any help to forget, what was the topic again?

I reverse using all three mirrors and if its turned on my reversing camera but my Wife who is an excellent driver looks over her left shoulder all the way

Life is like a camera, focus on what's important & you will capture it every Time
I look over my shoulder to start, that just about gets it right, ! then i will fine tune if required with outside mirrors -However if the back of ute is full and blocking vision, ?? I just use my side mirrors still get same result ??
Not Like Dougwe ?? he tries to hit black cats when he parks ?? and then puts his car right in the way of other people ?? so they just hit him now
Some years ago we had a lge station wagon, I was in close and parallel to gutter but just reversing back looking over left shoulder when I hit something.
A man in a new holden drove the front of his car in behind me, he crossed 2 solid lines to do so, he was doing a 3 point turn. I didn't see him as was below the window at rear of the wagon.
I had to pay for his car.
Later an older policeman said other driver was equally to blame.
Moral of story don't reverse until you have looked 360 degrees. I would never have dreamt anyone would try and do a 3 point turn across double lines, but they do.
a few years ago i was standing in the large workshop at my work.
the apprentice was reversing a customers car looking over his left shoulder........
i had told him to use his mirrors many times before
i yelled, he stopped.............about 6" short of smashing into the rear panel of a customers car on his right side
he didn't see this as he was looking over his left shoulder
Pull up level with the car beside you. Check rear view mirror. Reverse while turning the wheel left until you're at a 45 degree angle to the kerb. Continue reversing while turning the wheel right, making sure the front of your vehicle is clear of the car in front. I used to be a driving instructor.
I'll have to remember that one Rosie. Or maybe I should suggest it to my friend.
So it seems those of us who can reverse, use mostly the mirrors.
I understand the problem with the ute Dazren. Many moons ago we had an ancient Land Rover. It was impossible to see immediately behind the vehicle, so I was always very careful when reversing. One day at the school I nearly ran over one of the Mums on her bicycle. I don't know who got the biggest fright. It was only her screaming that stopped me.
I actually did driving lessons in my younger days - oh! so long ago - and I was taught as Gary describes and it works most of time with me. I actually had my mirrors changed on my ute I couldn't get used to those 'new' ones. happy camping
I was very good at reversing the motor home, ,
dad wasn't and hit things all the time when I didn't travel with him
but I'm not much good with a trailer though ,that's difficult
I mostly reverse into parking spots in the shopping centres because I can generally get it aligned first time. If I park nose in it tends to be crooked, and I have to back out a bit and straighten up.
Ashley, I wouldn't like to even attempt that. My daughter has driven big rigs but I don't know if she's reversed any.
Plendo, I've recently been looking at new vehicles and sat in one with that gadgetry. I thought of those things you point out, but I also thought that'd be great for my friend who can't reverse.
Gary, parallel parking one that I DO have trouble with. I actually try to avoid doing it. I think it's because I try to hurry it, you know, other cars behind you, wanting to get past etc. I have to consciously tell myself to take my time, concentrate and forget the cars behind.
Milo, I reckon you'd really have to have a reversing mirror with a motorhome. I wish they'd been around when I drove the old Land Rover.
I bought one off ebay but haven't had it fitted because I intend changing vehicles in the near future.
