Hubby and I are planning on doing a driving / camping trip in Tassie just after Xmas for 2 or 3 weeks. Want to check out Bay of fires. Does anyone have any suggestions of must see and do in Tassie? We have been a couple of times before and love it so much we want to just take our time. Not planning on booking anything apart from the ship over and back

Jules 47 has given some great spots to visit.
In fact, he has given away our favourite spot (not happy) will get too crowded with "boat people"
Hope you all have a great time here in paradise.

It doesn't matter where you go, you will find spectacular scenery and (mostly) friendly locals. Sheffield, Railton and surrounds are well worth a look, less commercialised than neighbouring Cradle Mountain. Stanley, Wynyard and surrounds are also stunning.
Anywhere on the East Coast is gorgeous, but again, aim for the smaller towns. To be fair though, at that time of year, the whole East Coast will be alive with people. Freycinet is a must. There is also a lot to see and do in the South, beyond Hobart - Hartz mountains, the Arve valley with Tahune airwalk, the beautiful (and largely deserted) crescent beach at Southport (roads are a bit drunken goat track though), or the wonderful (and also largely deserted) Big & Little Roaring beaches of Dover.

The yellow boat ride on Bruny is a must, in my opinion. The Tahune airwalk is gorgeous, they now have a cable hang glider ride - great fun!
Cradle Mountain - we had snow on 6th December last year. Penguin - one of our favourite spots. Bay of Fires, of course, Cosy Corner North is one of the best - Lagoons Beach, just above Bicheno, the Elephant Pass up to St Mary's - windy and narrow - but worth it -
Legerwood - wood carvings. Pub in The Paddock at Pyegena(?), check out the robotic dairy nearby as well - good to see it working, you can stay at the Pub if you have a meal (motorhome camping in paddock).
****le Creek - a terrific spot - crikey, I could just go on and on - the whole state is worth a visit, for as long as you can! We had four months.
Enjoy yourselves!!

Heading to Tassie also Jan/Feb..doing the Franklin river white water rafting tour for a week, then off to explore some of the hidden treasures that are not so commercialised...Now just have to cross all fingers that the weather gods are with us.As Tassie's weather can be very unpredictable .
If you get to Dover/Southport, you can check out ****le Creek, Ida Bay Railway, Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk and a whole host of other things from that base.

Hi sucastja . We also love Tassie but shouldn't you book soon if you want to go just after Christmas?? Enjoy.
Hi neilnruth, we weren't planning on booking yer, as my daughter is expecting her second baby on 14th December. We thought we'd wait and see if everything is ok first with her. Maybe we should book the boat over anyway. We can always cancel if we need to
At the moment there is a red hot day light savings offer for day light travel on the Spirit of Tassie adult one way ticket $79 and kids from $5 one way and a $5 booking fee each way. This offer is available between 19th Jan 2014 3d-March 2014. Bookings are to be made up until 11.59pm 12th Oct 2013 unless sold out.

Hi neilnruth,
your comment got me thinking so yesterday I checked out the spirit of Tassie website and worked out dates and prices and found some that would suit. After discussing with hubby this morning, he said to book it. Well the one I wanted sold out overnight, so have had to change dates and paid a little more. We're now going on 23rd december and returning 16th January. That will give au a good 3 and a half weeks to explore.
my daughter is due on 14th December, so she better not go 9 days over like she did with first pregnancy!
Hi Ho Hi HO of to Tassie we. We have booked the ferry yesterday and leave on the 9th of Feb and return on the 7th of May 2014. after meeting Bob and Sandra at the Warrego River Caravan Park ,and say that we were going on the 10th of Feb, change our minds and going on the 9th. Hoping to meet many other nomads on our travels there.
I'm glad you decided to book sucastja . It would have been sad if you'd missed out on the dates you wanted. Hope the bub arrives near the due date - for your sake and your daughter's.
