IMHO Win 8 is just another learning curve, once you get past the start screen it's just like Win 7, I was pulling my hair out with Win 8 until I discovered that Classic Shell now I am loving it, not sure if Win 8.1 will improve it much its mainly bug fixing and I have not found any bugs in mine yet, I have the Dell Alienware 17, so far great machine.
Just found this in regards to Win 8.1, right click the new Windows icon in the bottom left and you have a menu like Win 7
I agree with those who don't like Windows 8 - although I should think the Shell enhancement would go a long way to allay most peoples fears.
As for NT, XP and Windows 7 - NT was a more business orientated OS, and XP, well they named it well ...Xtra Problems! Windows 7 is excellent it's the most stable OS they have made.
If you wanted a real OS you would be using Linux/Unix of course wouldn't you?

Hey bigW I reckon you are trying to get us stuck down a hole with all that.
I am a bit slow with updating in that department as I have Windows 7 and it works ok so can stay. Gee I still haven't done the iPhone and iPad system update cos I'm a bit worried of loosing something, anyway I'm still trying to get my head around the system I have.

I bought a laptop with win8, and tried to return it to win7 with no success after much trying. What do you do? Just grin and bear it. The classic shell helps a lot, but I found win7 much better. It can only get better with Win8.1. Bill
I have one laptop with 7 and another with 8. I'm not happy with 8 but that maybe because of the real changes, and a style we are not used to. Windows 8.1 is available as a trial version, but I'm not prepared to download t yet. If you read into the fine print, there are still problems to be sorted out and it is not fully supported by Microsoft as yet..

BG, I also have not downloaded the 8.1 trial, will await its release then wait for any feedback from others, that ClassicShell is great.
Been in IT for 44 years and as the saying goes "never be at the bleeding edge of technology"...work for a large insurance company and we are just moving to Win7...nice and stable now. i just took a wild step and bought an Apple.......
Bought a brand new S---ung laptop style in June. Finally got around to fitting the full version of Norton to then be told I had viruses, Trojans, Malware and if I sent more money I could have them deleted. Hated Win 8 with a passion but I was a Mac user previously. Fortunately a line appeared on the screen which was a hardware problem and as I hand ticked the replace box and not the repair, they have given me credit to the value of what I paid. Just bought a new Macbook Air, 11" screen and what a little beauty. Windows 8, nah, give me a Mac anyway.
here's my original question below, I did not ask what system everybody was running, I intended to help those with Win 8 who missed the start menu so let's get back on topic please.
Do you miss the start menu?
Here's a free one, just installed on my Win 8 and it's great, get the Version 3.6.8
