Yes, I have done that for a period of time untill I managed to get a solid panel to replace it as I wanted to portable back as a portable.
If its a folding panel need to fit it to a couple of mounting rails to keep it rigid.

I have did exactly what you are thinking of on my previous van be sure to leave a sufficient gap between roof and panel for air flow ( 40mm). I used aluminium angle pop riveted to panel and then stuck the angle with sikaflex to the caravan roof.
