Good thing you found all those old pics, Doug. Even better is being able to preserve them digitally. Many of my old slides have deteriorated beyond saving, but I managed to rescue quite a few and share them with members of my family who would otherwise have never been able to enjoy them. Digitizing old pics is very labor intensive and time consuming but definitely worth it. It only needs to be done once.

Has anyone tried Vidio to disc? If so what is the best way to do it. I have some home movies I would like to save if I can.

If you have one of the newer personal digital recording devices with DVD Player/Burner for your TV, you might be able to hook up your VCR and burn to a DVD (I think). Just go into menu, settings and follow the prompts. You will have a bit of quality loss during the transfer stage but better than nothing.

If this can't be done there are a lot of places around that can do it for you. I will check it out myself with my equipment to see if it works one day, I have some home grown stuff on video that might be good to put on DVD.

If Wombat reads this he probably knows some way of doing through your poota. For a wombat he's very clever.

Maybe even ask the question as a separate thread here in 'I digress'.

When I separated from my missus the kids went through my slides and videos and took what they wanted and destroyed the rest.
Even took the scrap book my mother did of my time whilst racing push bikes and even gutted my dad's war photo album that was all cataloged so anyone could see where each photo was taken and who were in it. I wanted to donate it to the RSL but they all took a few photos and then left the others loose in the back.
If you have your old photos you are lucky.
I now have many copies of all my photos but I know they will be erased when the kids get the hard drives as they are not interested in anything I do, justr want me to get back to work and stop spending money (not much chance of that LOL)

Connect vhs to computer with the above unit, then record to computer then download to DVD.

That pic in the eBay site shows the Easy Cap Capture, the end of the black plastic has a cap on it that plugs into a usb port

did all of my video's about 3 years ago, it took about 3 weeks, all now on dvd with double copies at my son's place for safe keeping.

I know that feeling Brian, but from a different perspective.............

Living in dense bush as I do, I decided back around 1998 it would be best to leave all my old photos with mum who was living in town in case a bushfire went thought when I wasn't home. Over the next ten years, poor old mum slowly drifted into dementia. One day she was going through some old boxes and found mine containing all my old photos and you guessed it! She didn't recognise the people in the photos, so threw them all in her wood stove!

I didn't believe her when she told me. I thought she was just stirring, but it was true. I was gutted!! Not only that, but she had a good old clean-out and even got rid of all my old black and white baby photos, early school photos........ the whole kit and caboodle

It is terrible to lose photos - my daughter is keeping mine, and son has some as well.

Friend lost all their photos (in fact, everything) in a house fire - I had some random snaps of their children, and also the invitations to their wedding and engagement - they were thrilled when I handed it all over.

When my parents had to 'downsize' in a hurry to move into independent living unit, someone found slides of our wedding and my brother's had been put in the trailer for the tip. Fortunately they had the sense to bring them back but it made me wonder how many others went without being noticed.
We were given a slide scanner and I found the biggest hassle was the foam that had lined the box of slides had deteriorated over the 40+ years and every slide had 'black spots' on it. It took work to clean them up but I was glad we now had some photos of our first son on the computer. He didn't get into the albums like the others because it was mostly slides we took in those days.
Well done Doug. You needed those days at home to get that job done.

Even if you manage to convert your pics and videos to digital format remember to keep multiple copies in multiple formats - I had mine on a hard disc that crashed - managed to get most of them back but it cost a fortune. If I'd copied them onto a USB stick it would have been a different story ... lesson learned.
