While at Edithburgh, Yorke Peninsula, yesterday two GNs enquired as to the cost of filling their own 9kg gas bottle at the local BP service station. $37 came the reply. The two unsuspecting GN,s nearly dropped in shock. The cost of a swap and go was $37. At Ardrossan it was $25.90 for a refill, $38 for a swap and go.
Needless to say that greedy business owner failed to make a sale. So when heading to Edithburgh make sure that you have full gas bottles on board. I pay $14.99 for a 9kg bottle in Melbourne.
Only one problem regarding us selling gas to O/S countries very cheaply is that the O/S companies are the ones who own/finance the projects ,so they dictate it all on there own terms.
Sad to think not really any owned gas projects at the moment are owned by Australian companies .
I filled a 9kg gas bottle at Katherine and payed $38.00 just about had a heart attack,$20.00 at rays outdoors at home, but if you need it you just got to get it ,it would have cost more in doctors bills if the better half had of run out of gas.
Apart from the obvious answers................ "They are the ones I bought" or "The ones that came with the caravan" or "They are Manchester style and nothing else will fit"
Why do so many people go for a refill when a swap and go bottle is so cheap??
You get the same style bottle that you hand in, it has been checked tarted up and refilled, it'll never be out of date, and, you can get them pretty much anywhere.
Just curios, ASIDE from the obvious answers that is!!
Cheers

Here on the YP (Yorke Peninsula) I think all BP's may be $37 for the refill because most of them have a Swap and Go. Don't they have some sort of agreement? Not sure if it's wider spread - the agreement that is.Just about to find out what a refill will cost in Kadina SA YP. Will advise....
The answer to owning or not owning the bottle is that some organisations will not re-fill Swap n Go bottles because the SnG agreement specifically states that the ownership, maintenance and refilling of the SnG bottle shall ONLY be done by SnG associated people.

G'Day Rik, must be different in Queensland - just checked my Swap n Go bottle and it says "customer owned" Other bottles I have from Kleenheat and Supercheap have nothing on then indicating ownership except the peel-off label.
In Toowoomba Masters and Bunnings have 9KG refills for under $22

Hi Rik
Not quite what I meant, I'll try another angle!!
If it upsets so many people to buy gas at $38 for a refill, and a swap and go is $22 (which is what I normally pay at Bunnies) why do people have a refill? Why not just hand the bottles in at the swap and go and just keep doing that? I had new bottles with my caravan and the first time they emptied, just swapped them in at Bunnies no problem, ever since, get a nice cleanly painted bottle for $22.
Any thoughts??

A swap and go gas bottle up the Cape was $49 last trip,so considering the isolation it was cheap compared to some of these places I am reading about.
And yes I just buy the Swap and Go, cant see any difference in the Gas contained inside the bottle from mucking around re filling your own gas bottles.
The reason I refill my bottles is they have 3-4 years left before they are out of date ,I have checked some of those swap and go bottles and they only have 3months left on them, I will just keep on filling until the end.

And what will you do at the end of your present bottle life span??

Happy Caravanning. I guess if you want cheep Gas perhaps stay in the City. Un fortunately I have to buy LPG for my vehicle at Edithburgh at 98c / litter. The local LPG gas supply is non existant in Yorketown as the owner is unable to afford to refill the tank. There has been no gas supply here for at least 3months now, & not likely to happen any time soon. Also Petrol is $1.65/litter. I gues if a swap & go is $37 then why shouldn't filling a cylinder be the same price, as some one has to take the time to fill it. Yes I have been in business before & found filling gas cylinders a pain & hardly worth the effort, & that's the reason busineses go for the swap & go system.
Margret River WA, we tried to get a refill, however the only outlet that refill was the Mitre 10 and they wanted to charge the same price as a swap.... $34 in 2011. Their reason was that a staff member would have to be dragged away for other duties to do the refill, we counted 4 staff lounging around doing nothing.
Needless to say we didn't, so we drove to Bussleton, got our refill at BBQ Galore for $22 and proceeded to spend another $170 in the town.
We renamed Margret River to Markup River as a result, and yes we tell everyone.
The real shame of it all is that the locals have to pay those same prices..
Try Normanton August 2012 a 9kg swap bottle was $55 same size just up the road in Karumba was $40 same bottle at Mount Gambier was $19. So if possible try to ensure full bottles before you get to those out of the way places.
Mark wrote:But I am really struggling with this thread to understand what the issue with swap and go is considering the price of a refill ??
Maybe it has to do with location. For example, I bought and fill my own 9kg bottles and my closest filling stations are all located in Ballarat. I used to go to Ray's but found the guy who usually filled the bottles a grump who bordered on being a bully. Other staff who work there appear less than enthusiastic, possibly because of their bullying manager. Also, a fill at this store was around $26 and that was three years ago.
There are other potential filling stations scattered around Ballarat. Prices vary, but all well above $20, however I discovered Barbecues Galore in Mair Street were only charging $20 for a 9kg fill, so I've been going there ever since. It's a pain to find a park right outside, but the very friendly staff are only too willing to carry the bottle to your vehicle, or wait on the footpath until you do a "drive-by."
By comparison, there are many "swap & go" outlets around Ballarat. Bunnings are one of the cheapest, but at $36.98????? A big difference to the Barbecues Galore refill price of $20, which is probably $22 by now as I haven't bought any gas for over 12 months. There is a Swap & Go not all that far from where I live, but they're charging $38 for a change-over.
The Swap & Go option is absolutely much more convenient, plus you can take your old bottle and swap it into their stock. Also, you never have to worry too much about out of date self owned bottles which have to be tested and stamped every ten years at considerable expense, however in my district the expense of the Swap & Go system simply isn't worth it.
Oh, in case anyone is wondering if I tote a 9kg gas bottle around in the Kombi, the answer is no. I use the 9kg bottles at home for the B-B-Q and some cooking when the wood fire isn't going. I use one of those little single burner gas canister stoves when out and about in the Kombi and it never gets used inside. They do tend to blow a seal every now and then and turn into a fire ball.

G'Day QueenKombie - can you explain exactly what this means....fireball??? - which seal goes? I use one all the time and I can imagine the quality control that goes into their manufacture!
In Murwillumbah, Tweed valley Far Nth NSW, the local garage charges $18.95 to refill a 9kg cylinder. Well....I've got a 4.5kg cylinder and was charged......yep, $18.95.

I first heard about it when camped with a fellow who works at Bunnings and bought his there. He was saying how he was camped about three months ago when his suddenly turned into a bonfire. Fortunately he had it outside. He said he never uses one inside his van because his Bunnings store were continually getting them back by people claiming that theirs had "popped a seal" and turned into a fireball.
I haven't had any problems with mine. I think it's great, but I used to use it in the doorway of my Kombi and now make sure it's outside after his warning. He claimed that they "pop a seal" but I don't know that much about them. I bought mine from a caravan place and it's a recognised brand. Maybe there's a difference between that and the ones you see in Coles and Wollies?
Without sounding mean, I do believe my friend probably exaggerated the issue a bit by claiming people were "continuously" bringing them back, but I have no doubt that his malfunctioned. He threw it in the bin.
