I'm a newbie as far as inland travelling goes, and I'll be off on my first trip in NSW soon.
Now I'm looking into travel insurance. I'm trying to find one which has a good cancellation policy. I would like to be well covered especially in case I'd have to cancel the booked accommodation because of unexpected illness .
A friend of mine once lost all of the money she had paid in advance to the hotel she booked, beause she couldn't travel on the booked date ( she had the flu ) . I don't want that to happen to me!
So if anybody knows of a recommendable travel insurance with good cancellation policy, I'd be very grateful ...Better safe than sorry, right ...
We spent two years traveling around NSW in caravan parks ect and never booked once, never needed to unless in school hols on the coast, and we chose to keep away from those areas at those times. You can always get in somewhere. This saves any probs with loosing booking fees ect. The most we have done is rang some parks to see if our rig would fit in, then we juat say we might be there in a day or two ect. Thats the best part of travel, freedom.
Good luck with it.
Same with us - if we want to stay a Bullamacanka and are worried they may be booked out we ring them in the morning or the day before - never been asked to pay in advance.
Welcome to the forum.
The only time I book in advance is if I'm on a Travel Auctions deal. Part of the deal is that you book in advance - mind you in my case that can mean I ring up about 3-4 days in advance and book it. Cancellation insurance is available on the Travel Auctions website but I've never taken it and have no idea how it works.
I've only been caught once like this when travelling - it was during winter and bitterly cold where I was at the time and I called up a motel in the next town along the track and they required I paid there and then, wasn't to keen on paying over the phone with credit card, then again I wasn't to keen on spending another night freezing either so I gave in and booked with them.
As luck would have it I encountered mechanical issues about an hour after making the booking which halted me and the said part wouldn't be delivered till the next day.
I called the motel and told them the situation and even told them which mechanic I was at and inquired if they would move my booking back a day, they said they couldn't/wouldn't do that but I could re-book for the next day. Ok, so I said yeah I will re-book then and then they told me that I would have to pay a cancellation fee plus the cost of the new booking.
I was a bit stumped by this. I said to the lady on the phone 'but hang on I've just forked out money for something I won't be using, and I want to delay by a day, so why should I have to pay a cancellation fee and then pay again for a room I have already paid for, when you won't provide any refund on what I've already paid'. End of story was they ended up with $140 for something they never had to provide. I never got my money back, so since then I have never advanced booked any motels, not that I ever use them a lot. If anything I just ring and check on availability and that's it.

Welcome from me too emmy21, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I have just returned from being out in the playground for the last 5 months and never booked once. I ventured up through central Victoria, central NSW, central Q'land, across to Townsville (Stayed in family back yard in Avan) then down the east coast to Sydney and down the Hume hwy to South West Gippsland. I must admit though I do both CV parks and alternative camping. I usually leave in the morning to arrive at my destination by between 2-4pm. Not once did I have a problem getting a spot for the night or longer.
Whatever you do and decide enjoy and,

unless it is for a $1000 or so it is not worth the trouble. The excess is a few hundred dollars and if you are claiming illness you have to get a statement for your "normal" doctor saying it is not a pre condition.
I have domestic travel insurance that comes as a free inclusion on my bank account also free travel insurance for overseas travel as part of my Visa credit card both are with ANZ I have saved a lot more than the yearly fee with the credit card insurance. One good part of the credit card insurance is that it is still good till I am 80 and by then I probably won't be venturing overseas any more.
I don't think domestic insurance is really needed as there is not the problem of huge medical bills that you can incur while on overseas travel also some of the problems you encounter may be covered by NRMA or similar road service membership on your car.
