Pick up dog droppings please

We have 2 boys who wee on every tree- thank god we don't have to clean that up, as I'd be 1,000 miles behind us still scrubbing !!

We use grocery bags which we re-cycle to poo- bags. I tie one to the loop on each lead, replacing it when one is used, so we always have 2 with us. I found it never pays to just have one, as soon as I drop a full one in a bin, one of the dogs (usually Paddy who can poo for Australia) goes into a squat.

I can usually find an extra bag in the pocket of every jacket, pair of jeans etc.... like all of us I suppose.

My best tip though is to keep their stools nice and firm so they are easy to pick up...............no canned muck, it seems to come out as sloppy as it goes in.

We, like many others, enjoy freedom camping. However we are seeing too many people who arrive and lead their dogs away from their own campsite to allow their dogs to deficate near someone else's site. Often many dog owners look around to see if they have been spotted, and only pick up the droppings if that is the case. Others don't even do this much.

I am a dog lover but worry that these actions will bring about more closures of free camps

I second that. Welcome to the forum Hollywood.

Also it would be good if humans buried their own droppings and disposed of the toilet paper. Campsites can get very smelly!bleh

Have to agree with you as well. When camped at Lightening Ridge I saw exactly that happening while picking up after Jessie.

Welcome Hollywood. Yep, very true, but, as GD said, some human waste (baby nappies, my pet hate) leaves a lot to be desired. We have a plastic roll container that clips to Sasha's collar that contains blue doggy bags. Nice and handy. Can be brought with refills from pet shops.

Pick it up for them and then deposit it back on their own site near their door at night with a note.

Well said freehazzas!

That is why I always even in town) have my 'tail bag' on when walking my boys, I can carry several plastic bags in that + toys+treats+ spare lead etc (not all in the same pocket !)
If I see someone not doing the right thing I call out "oh, haven't you got a bag? here I have a spare'!

It is not just cmap sites we are in danger of losing, we could lose all our lovely safe dogs off leash parks too.

We always pick up after our dog. We have just returned from two weeks away and now find it different not having doggie bags in our pockets. Forget to check some of our pants pockets before the wash so now have the cleanest doggie bags ever.

But if your dog is getting that much loved opportunity to run off-leash, how do you know where he is leaving his nuggets?

Simple really and applies everywhere.

USE YOUR EYES.

When you see your pooch is about to poop you have two choices.

1     Be responsible and go over and pick it up.
2     Do like the majority (sadly) turn your back and walk away.

Off now to clean the dog poop off my sneakers from yesterdays Pug Playgroup at the Mernda Off Leash Dog Park, Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Keep them in sight! My boys, being whippets have the ability to run a very long way in a very short time frame, but they don't because they have been trained to stay within sight. Furthermore, they do not go off leash until the ablutions have been completed! That way I know just where the deposit was made. They do not go off leash if there is a lot of rubbish around nor in a 'camp' area where there may be others around who dislike or are scared of dogs either. Still, I find many places for them to safely run, we play games together this focuses them on staying close to me, I am the provider of all fun! As soon as they lose internet in the games we go off for a controlled walk and if required this will be on leash, I am a keen walker and enjoy looking walks! My dogs my responsibility!

We have been full-time traveling with two spaniels for around 18 months and it infuriates me the times I see so called dog lovers just ignore the poo their beloved little fluffy has just done, and walk away.

I always carry multiple bags with me on all walks, and too have often given one to some owner after having embarrassed them by passing my opinions, after watching them not do the right thing.

A very cheap source of bags are desposible baby nappy bags, from the baby aisle in most supermarkets, they are a good size and cheap, just a few dollars for 250 box.
They are also environmentally friendly and break down eventually.

Plus they have a 'scent' to cover the smell of the contents!

Ron & Shirley my comment was in the context of places/situations where dogs are left off-leash for hours or all the time (which I have seen at some places). Obviously the owner cannot be watching continuously.  I could possibly keep up with a pug that was off leash, but my italian greyhounds can be out of sight in seconds (45kph is not unusual). Like Pawsoz I have found that the only way is to keep them on leash until the job's done, then allow a short run off leash IF APPROPRIATE. Unfortunately, unlike Pawsoz I am unable to walk far and certainly not fast. one of mine cannot be trusted off leash at all if there are roads or other dogs nearby, so to keep him safe the poor guy almost never gets to run off lead when travelling (which may be why he would prefer not tobiggrin)

We left home over three years ago with two dogs, now down to one oldy left . We will not replace him when he goes as too many dip witts not picking up are eventually going to make it impossible to travel freely with a dog. It will be easier just travelling with the birds.

If your dog is running so free its out of your site when it poops, then you need a kick up the ass for lack of supervision. Even free ones need to be supervised, or is it just an excuse not to pick it up. I know where my dude is ALL the time.

Yep, be responsible. At times, I haven't been able to buy doggy doo bags, but I always have food freezers bags on hand. There are no excuses. Pick up after your dog at all times. Its not fair on the rest of us if you don't.

I remember once when Paddy went into a squat after I have thrown the (already loaded) bags in the bin while walking back to our van.

We simply knocked on the door of the closest van and asked if they had a spare plastic bag....... which they did.

I have occasionally - before I learned to stash extra bags in pockets- had to walk back with a bag, try to remember the spot and find the load. I'm not sure if anyone was watching me though. If they were, and saw me leave and head home, I guess they would have been whinging about some irresponsible dogowner leaving it on the ground. I was always straight back with the bag!

Accidents happen, but you still have a responsibility to the community.

Have had some funny occasions since getting Jessie. I always carry a roll of doggie doo bags in my pocket.
Thank goodness as yesterday while parked in Kumbia we went for a walk up the street. 3 times she stopped to poo and each time was after I had picked up and disposed of bag in rubbish bin.
On the way the day before at Kilkiven stopped for coffee, never thought about doggie bags as we had been parked the night less than 5 ks away.
Very nice thank you Jessie, a big poo was deposited right in the doorway while I was inside ordering coffee. Had left her tied to the nearest outdoor table. Luckily I found a large pink napkin from a previous cafe in my handbag and a rubbish bin nearby.
The one that I couldnt work out was at Aramara, just west of Maryborough. Did the right thing, no rubbish bin to pop it into so left it beside the decorated rock at the entrance to the very nice picnic area with covered tables and public toilets.

It might be an idea to have a bin and poo bags at the entry of a free camping place . No idea who is going to empty the bin, but bin and bags would be a start.
I have bags in every jean or jacket. To get firm droppings give the dog a bone every day. Sure helps. I buy big bags of bones and freeze them. Johanna

It is so easy to clean up after your dog has done his business. M y wife and I always carry a supply of plastic bags, just in case.
We have a small Pomeranian, so not such a big dropping.

Whenever we were stuck with no bins, we place the offending doggie bag on the drill bar of the van to dispose of when we did find a bin.

Yep, if there are no bins, it comes with us.............. not happily I must admit, but might as well have left in on the ground for the worms to break down as leave it wrapped in plastic.
