I had this thought.,

G,day I have just finished reading the newsletter re.the pros and cons of free or park vanning .

Now picture this ...You are anywhere in Oz and its time to get off the road for the day.You are about to pass a private driveway ,it may be in the middle of nowhere or on the edge of a town but you slow down cause its got a sign about 600ml sq on the side of the gate entrance and the top half of the sign has an outline of a caravan on it with  a big tick thru the middle of it.To signify that vans are welcome.the bottom half has a number of little signs, the first is..10/3 to say it will cost you $10 to stay the night and only for a max of 3 days. The next one shows a fifth wheeler to say its got good access. The next two will show kids and dogs with or without ticks to state the obvious.

Now are you with me on this?  Good,See I live rural but I am not on a main road ,in fact quite the reverse  . But if I did

,  I have a drive you can turn a semi in .The shed is big with a fire, dunny etc and is not used often .I also have a huge outside verandah with BBQ and fire that is always on in the winter.

This surely must be replicated in every town in the country and lets face it we vanners are by nature friendly and sharing types so if someone wants to give you a few bucks to feel safe, put their bum against your fire and maybe use a real dunny with no strings whats the big deal?If you as the home owner don,t want anybody to stay for whatever reason you just turn the sign around when you feel that way.

Now I guess it sounds simplistic but if I was heading down towards home and I was tired and I was told of a safe homely spot to pull in knowing that a fire would be going when I got there ,why not.!  Food for thought ? Aw yeah the pics are of my shed and outdoor fire .Cheers John

My concern for you would be running foul of the local council and whether they would allow it.?

Would you need to be registered as a Farm or Home stay business?

PS: Is that a barber chair in the pic and is it used as a bar stool or haircuts?

Great idea but in this day and age there will be insurance issues.

G'day Vic a lawyer mate said at worst I could enquire as to what it would be needed to get to rent out a certain amount of sq mtrs of my drive for less than 24hrs ,since that is all they are using . I personally will not be doing this type of thing , but if I Was on a main rd I would consider it .in regards to the chair it is a 1912 dental chair that I restored and it's my wife's drinking chair when we have shed beers!

Over 30 years ago the ability to stay overnight on farms in the UK had been set in place by a very large caravan club.
You received a booklet with a list of all the farm sites and how many van sites and the overnight cost you had to be completely self contained, it worked well, possibly the insurance aspect had been covered by the club, you had to be a club member to use the site. The same club also owned some very large caravan parks.
Have often wondered why we haven't got the same scheme operating here, probably the only club big enough to organize this would be CMCA.
Cheers
David

(don't know how to do a link thing)
But one of our members on here (florinhill) is a member of this - he is in Tasmania, and offers a place to park up, power and great friendship through the ozcamps system.

I also had this notion of letting people stay on my few hec.s of land just outside of Agnes Waters in QLD.

There is a shed turned into a kind of Clayton house with power /water.

When I had a meeting with the local council regarding it all,i just gave up any thought of doing it as the planning rules and all the other jargon that they were throwing at me was doing my head in.

But in saying this if it was for free and the people staying were friends and not  paying the $5 in around about way it was ok to a point.

My rellies just out of Mission Beach in QLD have people camp and no one has bothered them.So I guess it all comes down to where and how the council administer their rules and bylaws .

If we are self contained and just want somewhere to park and a 'friend' offers to let us use his paddock then what does that have to do with council???? Unless they get suspicious about the number of 'friends' you suddenly seem to have I would have thought what you do on your private land is not their business unless you are making money out of it. Of course we could always 'pay' by providing wine/beer/casual work.....

Don't give up on council too easily Herbie,,, go into battle,,,lol.

I did in house we bought in Adelaide,,, stormwater was going into neighbours place next door,,, so to cut a long story short I needed a new 100mm stormwater (the second one) into the street. The council planning engineer I spoke to tried repeatedly to get me to drain it into back yard (it's too low for this OR I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF IT , TO WATER TREES,,DUH) and he tried to bluff me too.

However I had read their planning policies THOROGHLY and I had him cold, whenever he spoke I quoted THEIR POLICIES and asked why they weren't using them??

Anyway in absolute triumph I prevailed,,,,, imagine that a win with council on their policies. I really had to pat myself on the back.

The point is they try to bluff us as if the they have absolute power, when often they don't.

End of my rant for the month,, lol

Cheers

moamajohn,my question is for example the "donation"is $10 per night would that include the same facilities

as you would expect at a c/p,or would it only be a donation to park and that you would have to be "fully self contained".

i am not "fully self contained"but i would be happy to relax at your place anytime,it looks very inviting.

G,day Subaru,Yes I think donation is a good word .Facilities are only what you have as I would never step on C/parks toes .My proposal was for O/nighters . Since you don,t look too dodgy and if I was doing the caper you would be welcome around the fire anytime .

Wouldn't there be an issue with public liability with this?
If you are allowing the general public (eg: passing nomads not known to you) to stay for a fee would you not be responsible for liability, ohs etc?

My issue with council regarding letting people camp over on my property, was more than just the word camping

It was a hundred different things, some you would not believe.

Even entry and exit locations/// Erosion // Habitat// Neighbours quality of life.

It went on and on.
