Some coverage depends on the phone you have, if it is one not suitable for country areas then your coverage wont be great (eg; one of the Next G series are needed for country areas).

Have been traveling in North Queensland since July , We have found the Bruce Hwy in better condition than the internet Hwy in north Queensland we are with Telstra and when you travel east of the Bruce Hwy mobile phone service and Wireless internet is poor to none . The last week we were at Forrest Beach east of Ingham and had no mobile phone or internet service had to drive 18 Klm back into Ingham to use mobile and Wireless internet , Also in most parts of North Queensland the internet when you get it is very slow. I have not heard any local complain about this but all go on about how bad the bruce Hwy is we have had no problem with the highway very few hold up for road works and if you want better road we must expect some hold up at road work .
My son was telling me today Telstra mobile coverage over in Hervey Bay is shocking. He can get only two bars over there but oback here in Biggy all bars are up.
Telstra test handsets and mark the ones that work best in rural and remote areas with a blue tick. These phones have a superior pick up and will work in areas where the signal is week. Of course that won't help if you are out of range of any towers.
Not sure of the problems as I had full Telstra cover at all times in Deeragun and Hervey Bay, I have a iPhone 4s which is a blue tick Telstra Phone. I haven't had any problem anywhere so far and have had the phone for over 12 months now. I also use it as a modem for ALL internet use for my iPad or Lap Top.

I have a Telstra blue tick (rural) phone, and a wireless 4g hotspot in the van. I have a Next G Marine aerial on both the van and the 4wd, We have travelled from Brisbane to Birdsville, across NSW to SA, throughout the Flinders, Oodnadatta Track, York & Eyre peninsulas, Across the Nullarbor, into WA. Rarely do I have no service at all. Occasionally I have limited, and not able to get internet service, and maybe only can receive text or messages on phone. but in two years, have not felt "isolated"

See Australian Nomad Technology (ANT) Satellite Internet coverage EVERYWHERE in Australia. Big setup, fairly crappy plans, but you can get your internet fix 24/7 anywhere. We have been using it for 4 years, and aside our plan going from 10Gb to 1Gb with no reduction in price, we are hanging in so that when they get a mobile NBN plan we won't have to change much.....Ya elephant may fly too..lol
