How do you get your news?

Hi Denis, when at home I like to watch the evening news especially regional news but even then don't take a lot of notice what I hear or see as most is rubbish. When out and about the same if reception is available or maybe even ABC radio but again just to get an idea of what is going on out there.

Hi Denis ,I,m with you, of late here in Vic the first 3 pages are about the so called footy drama then 4 pages of politics [me I am a died in the wool Lib and will never change so who cares !] Then the druggie stuff closely followed by the molesters ! Fair dinkum I head straight to the middle to see whom is selling Corona beer cheap and then to the crossword and thats it . I then turn on the telly and try to find something that is not reality,police,doctor a comedy that the yanks think is soo funny but i just can,t get my head around it and I finish up watching some old movie that was on telly 5 weeks ago !
I have a really big shed and am considering taking up the banjo for no particular reason ,heaven help the neighbors !! John

Wouldn't wrap garbage in he Herald Sun or the Australian. Can't work out why an American citizen owns so many papers.

I subscribe to the digital version of The Age, Guardian Australia and Crikey. If we don't support some media with $ we'll get even worse quality if possible. I listen to Radio National and News Radio. I have a TV on board but so rarely turn it on.

From the ABC web site I downloaded a frequency guide which shows every ABC radio station in Australia.

I recommend RSS feeds. You just need an RSS feed reader. All the news is displayed in headline form.

I also like technology news. It's not all geek stuff. A lot of it is written for the average person.

If you want a fairly good world news on TV, try SBS nightly at 6.30pm.

When we first started watching this (mostly out of disgust with the commercial channels) we found it a bit depressing, so many terrible things happening around the world that you never hear about otherwise. Now we give thanks to live in this beautiful safe country every time we watch the news.

I gave up buying newspapers over 20 years ago. I listen to ABC radio, watch ABC news on telly, and regularly check out the Beeb on line. I enjoy The Drum on ABC TV 6pm weekdays.

Glad we're not on our own - thought for a while that it was just us getting old. There's always good that comes from communicating on this forum and there are a quite a few good tips above, especially obtaining the RSS feeds suggested by Dorian. The ABC is getting more like commercial channels, even local ABC radio is about personalities laughing at each others jokes. Radio National will probably soon be hobbled too.

I find it amusing to flick between the network news services and observe they all seem to have the same stories.... What a joke.

I get my news from whatever people tell me!!

Can't be bothered, it's all rubbish and what has happened has happened and the rest is speculation, I'm with Herbie, WWlll could take place and I probably wouldn't be aware of it unless they called me up to serve again.

I enjoy the peace and serenity of my sheltered lifestyle and the company of SWMBO

All was "okay" Herbie. An extremely sad visit knowing that you'll never see your Dad again, and saying the final farewell was agonising!!
But, Dad was stoked that I had made the journey to see him.

Anyway, got any news I need to know about?? LOL biggrin biggrin

Gee Mark when,i read your post regarding saying goodbye to your dad and knowing it would be the last time

It made a lump jump into my throat...But at least you both now have good memories to remember.

Been away for a few months,doing what I love to do a little fishing/ camping/ visiting some great little out of the way towns that really are just a dot on any map,but the people in these out of the way places are the true reason I love to travel.Not really into the ritzy glitzy up market glossy places, Done all those places early in our travelling.

If and when you get to QLD, you have to go out to a place called Tyrconnel,about 150ks west from Cairns.

It is off the beaten track,but back in the gold rush days there was over 10.000 people scrambling around here looking for gold.There is several original buildings still standing and machines still remain.Up until the 1980s the family still mined for gold,but now it is a beaut place to camp for a few days.

A drive to Mt Mulligan 25ks north/west of Tyrconnel is also worth a look often refered to as the Ayers Rock of the north.18ks long and 300mt high Sandstone Bluff it is QLDs oldest dated Aboriginal site and also has a tragic coal mining history. Will I be back YOU BETCHA .So put these few little gems in your black book mate.

Thanks for the "News" on where to go over Cairns way, hope to be around that area this time next year, possibly!!
Well you know what it's like when you take a track and end up somewhere else for a while.
Just negotiating the Wet on GoGo Station in the Kimberley 11 k's outside Fitzroy, 1.6 million acres!! Could be an interesting wet season.
Then onto and over the Gibb River Road, (unless we have done it in secret outside of the silly season wink ) and then Darwin, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Cape York, Inland NQ and I have to go and see around Mt Isa etc as we have friends from that area, then, well, who knows.

Tassie is calling too!!

That's my news for the day.

The new sounds the same because it's issue by media releases, and the journos aren't creative enough to develop some real news out of the release.
I can't read a newspaper. The spelling and grammar are appalling and I just can't do it. Then what I read was commentary rather than telling the story about the story. The story from the perspective of all concerned just doesn't happen anymore. Instead we have to read what the journo thinks based on the media release which only tells them what the distributor of the release wants them to know.
As a country freelance I had to find, write and read the news without the aid of media releases and other resources. The story tells itself if it's worth publishing.
Good luck finding a credible news bulletin.
I worked for the ABC mostly radio and it was the most credible at the time. I don't know about now.
Sometimes it's best not to know what's going on around us while we taking in the world from another perspective.
Do you really need to know what's making the news?
