The problem is when you like us live here we don't think a bout any more The first few years we lived here we went out on the boats all the time to have a look the season runs from July until I think late October ( not sure but the whale operators can inform you )
When you come again in our area we will shout you a trip to see the Whales mate if it is the right time of year
our mistake O boy we getting old I think to forget to mention the Whale tours
I hope this will make up for it

I was just watching a story on 60 minutes about Humpback Whales at Hervey Bay Q'land. They were saying the whales can be sighted in large numbers from June to late November each year. I was there a month ago for a couple of nights and was told don't bother spending my money on the trip out to see them as there were none sighted for a few days, bugger.
I had my first ever sighting of a whale last year near Batemans Bay and will be there again soon so will keep the eyes wide open that's for sure and armed with the camera.

If that's as close as you can get John, it's probably better to stay on dry land That would have been truly amazing.
Just make sure you don't bring your black cat please.
I had already checked out about the tours before I came to your place John. People around me at the park told me not to bother at that time I was there.

Thanks Rosey, I will check out the tours when there. I didn't know that.
Neil and Ruth had arranged for a mother whale and her young'n to give a bit of a display when they gave me a tour around their area south of Batemans Bay last year, unfortunately a little too far out for the camera to give justice. Still, a sighting is a sighting.

There are points along the coast where they come in quite close- we often see them off the headlands at home in Newcastle / Stockton / Merewether and Port Stephens.
Mothers with young calves go slowly heading south and sometimes shelter closer to shore - so good time to go looking.
Thanks for your info as well Rosie (R&R) I will put that on my Batemans Bay to do list. Mmmmm, I haven't got a to do list, better get one up and running.
Although I reckon there is a 'to do' list a mile long sitting on the table when I get there though

There have been lots around Magnetic Island , NQ. Even the people on the ferry saw a a mother and calf off Nelly bay! we had a pair in Horseshoe , last week. Every year there seems to be more.As long as they don,t end up as whaleburger in Japan, I am happy. A fisherman out at Maggie shoals had one get tangled in his anchor , and towed him for 15 mins, til he cut the rope!Lovely animals. Bill
