Garmin Nuvi 1450 LMT.

Bought a Garmin 1450 a few months ago on special with free map updates.

Not a patch on the old Tom Tom, maps are poor or non existent and it's now taken to rebooting randomly, a process that takes a number of minutes.

Guess it's the old story, you get what you pay for, back to the Tom Tom for me.wink

Want to buy my Garmin Nuvi 3590 LMT.
5" screen. It just does not match my Hema HN6 for map detail, be it the iGO side or the 4WD side.

I thought garmin were a good brand, when I got my navman  I compared it with garmin and tom tom and I only bought the navman cause dick smith had a good deal on them at the time.

Regards

Ashley

My Garmin 1450T is pretty good I think

Only problems have been the maps with stuffed up routing which were replaced pretty quick and the announcements that the destination is on the left when it really is on the right.

Several years ago I was looking at GPS units. Finally settled on a Garmin 1450T. Then it was one of the better ones.
It didn't quite suit what I wanted, street and off road. So I purchased a HN5i had both Street view and 4WD maps. Sort of 2 in one. I still had the old 1450T and used it as a backup. Ended giving the HN5i to daughter in law and got hold of that 3590 LMT, also picked up a HN6. After using the 3590 I soon discovered it was not as good as the HN6 for street view.
Since then I have just stuck with the HN6.

I alos found doing map updates with Garmin a pain. Few ever go smoothly.
I also found trip planning is a lot easier with the HN6 as I use the OziExplorer side of the unit vs iGO side. Trips and routes can be easily planed on the PC/laptop and transferred to the GPS with little fuss.
Garmin does have some trip planner but its not as good as using OziExplorer of the Hema Navigator PC software.

I've got the same model Garmin, never having had a GPS before it seems ok to me, I recently did a trip down south and it was spot on most times, except once going from Esperance to Cape Le Grande, it was taking me towards Kalgoorlie instead of the Cape Le Grande turn off so I had to ignore it.   It did show an exit on the left instead of the right once until I realised I had it upside down on the passenger seat, LOL !

I have just bought a Garmin 2597LMT and love it - especially now I have Camp6 on it! So much easier to read the street names and shows the POI - had a cheaper Navman before.
Decided not to pay $60 for a Camp7 book then get the maps for that when they come out - I do like to have the book to refer to then punch in the camp.

A brief comment about GPS units and maps and this specific one.

The Garmin 1450T uses Whereis map data for the detailed maps. Garmin switched map provider to Navteq post the release of the 1450T. Not sure when that happened.

Update maps for the 1450T are still Whereis maps.

With the various brands of GPS units some run Navteq maps others run Whereis maps. There was/is an issue with respect to the speed of updates, specifically with Whereis. That is why Garmin switched.

As for Santa having problems with maps on his 1450T vs his TomTom some of that is probably related to the above.

I dont know what the map source for the Tom Tom is but possibly its not Whereis.

As it is both Navteq and Whereis have a poor reputation of updating detail on their maps and making correction.

Hint take a decent paper map with you. If going of the beaten track add compass and protractor and make sure you have a sensible scaled map.

I may be a new GN but old hand to navigation.

(needed a bit of formatting I missed)

Have had lots of problems with mine Duh, particularly in remote area's, not talking off road, compared to the Tom Tom the maps are rubbish, in fact lots of area's are simply not covered.

Yes I have updated to the latest maps.smile

For some reason I was under the impression Garmin used a different map source for units such as the 1450T vs say the 2590T.
Not sure if that has something to do with your issue.

Santa: Also besides updating the maps did you update the GPS's software?

Mine will have to do me for awhile, can't afford another.   I also loaded Camp 6 POI's on mine also.

I recently purchased a Garmin 2797LMT 7" screen GPS.

The first one went fine from Artamon through to just past Goulbourn where it froze. Couldn't be turned off or any function enabled.
Let it run flat on the back seat, then plugged it in again and it worked without fault for the remainder of the trip.
Having said this, I did get it changed over for a new replacement as I had a three year replacement guarantee.

The live traffic updates via Suna on this unit are really handy, and accurate. Although it is advised that you connect an external (Car radio style) antenna to it for better reception. I use a Window mount wide-band scanner antenna which works fine and save boring another hole in the panel work. Even a 1/4 wave on a magnet mount would work well.

Just as an aside the Suna live traffic updates are broadcast via commercial FM broadcasters in each capitol city using digital technology. I don't expect the service will be expanded outside of metro stations. Although most rego authorities; VicRoads, NSW RTA etc have mobile phone apps that provide live traffic information which are handy.

The 2797 uses the Navteq maps, and so far they have been accurate.
Although I can't say same about the POI's, when using the POI function to locate a fuel servo, some of the marked fuel locations where clearly out of date.
The obvious solution here is to stick to the name-brand servos; BP, Shell, APCO, Caltex etc.

It would be good to have the Camps maps on it as well, I will look into this.

 Morning cultana.

Yes I did.

The unit is sitting on my desk as I type, next time I'm in Adelaide will take it back to DS, see if they are prepared to take it back and replace with another Tom Tom.

 Have a look on this page for the Camps 7 POI loading, also available for iPhones and iPads as well as GPS, see;
