Listers who are going to travel the Stuart Hwy from Augusta to Katherine may be interested in the following diesel prices. Applicable two weeks ago.
Coober Pedy.....$1.72.9.
Cadney Homestead....$198.00
Marla.....$194.00
Kulgera...$205.00 (is this close to rip-off or what? Note the prices of the ones either side of Kulgera. How can his costs be so high???????)
Stuarts Well....$195.00
Now to a different topic but also a rip-off. When we reached the Alice we noticed that water was escaping from the filler connection. We asked at a service station where we could get it fixed and went to see him. I explain the problem and he looks under the van and states that the one way valve that stops the water from coming out, is cactus. I ask if he has another one and he says yes. Before we go any further he says, the valve is $100.00 and $100.00 to fit it. I do not accept any cards and it is cash only.
At this stage I had no idea of the cost of the valve and we are heading to Darwin, so we are over the proverbial barrel. He was under the van doing the fitting for 12 minutes, I timed him. I knew that we were getting ripped off but what do you do?
PS. My local Jayco dealer has the valve for $39.50.

Thanks for the advice. We all need to let other nomads know of good value service providers and also the RIP OFF merchants.
Another Rip off is the price of LPG in Sydney's west it went up by 10 cents per litre this week, first at Coles then Woolworths followed by 7 eleven with BP holding at the lower price for the time being

Good for you Magnarc, I hope he gets his just desserts.
None of us mind paying a little more in these outback places but mostly they are just taking advantage of a large group of people who generate income into their towns and we all talk about our experiences to each other.
We are travelling up that way again next year.
Have a safe and happy trip, wish we were there too.

yes. Told i needed two new batteries in Bundaberg after just purchasing same three months before in Bega for nearly $600. A trip to battery world for free test said they were better than new. They did same with wheel bearings on my cruiser. STEVO

Thanks for the advice regarding the rip off merchant, they all want a piece of the action in the tourist season up that way ,and this is not just centred around The Alice. The Servo in the main street of Katherine when we were there last had his bowsers set up so you do not get as much fuel as the gauge shows.I only found this out from getting a 5lt Gerry can filled and when I went to pay for it it was more than what the Gerry can would hold. When I questioned why it was so much the bloke said that was what I had used, then I said but it went into a 5lt Gerry can not the vehicle and it would not take six and a half lts he said Gee !!! my bowser pump must be playing up...Was talking to others at the van park and a few people said when they had filled their vehicles they kind of thought some thing was wrong also.

Hi everyone, Just to let you know, I've edited some of the comments above to remove references to individual businesses. While I understand it is very important that we are able to warn each other when we have bad experiences, I have to be very careful about running into possible legal issues. I hope you understand.

Would be great to have a fuel watch section added - sectioned, DATE, LOCATION, FUEL PRICE, ULP, Diesel & LPG.
That way when you fill up, you add your cost to the fuel price section. Just a thought.....

Agree strongly with Towball any option on our forum to help us save a Dollar especially on fuel as we use so much of it might be worth a try Cindy, there's nothing to loose and I am sure our members would appreciate it but would need to be divided up by state/territory.
Anyone else agree

That cost for the non return valve was a great rip off of the max kind. We had a similar iasue a while back and I replaced mine from a home warehouse company from their plumbing section! The cost - $18.00. It pays to shop around if you can, you don't always need the actual brand replacement.

This is a bit off topic,I was talking to a person wich had alternator trouble on a Winnebago the rip of merchant in Broom charged the poor bugger $700.00 daylight robbery.
When we where at Coober Pedy in march had a similar problem with our washing machine ended up at the IGA and got the parts for $30, but I agree they get into you a fair bit but what else are you going to do no Bunnings or Kmart auto way out there.

I agree with State & Territory. When travelling would love to know prices up the road before arrival... Not only that but if the fuel merchants in each town know that their prices are on the internet, might keep their prices reasonable...

We had a problem with our water pump in Alice and found the guy to be ok - but only charged us $50 to fit new one!!!! (His office staff could do with a lesson in customer relations though!)

Hope they got reported to the relevant authorities, as all pumps are supposed to be checked for accuracy.
