VoIP Performance Loss


For some time we have used a router to drive both home phone & broadband internet....internet & VoIP cordless phone while travelling is  fine, but while at home the phone is almost useless....this has caused me to wonder why is it so ?......would the introduction of an external antennae help ??...have recently changed the cordless phone system as the previous model was some years old, but still no joy !

Any and all help would be gratefully received.

More details required .... what type broadband??? adsl??? adsl2??? wireless??

I previously had adsl on landline connected to router and wireless throughout the house and used voip as my outgoing phone. I use 'mynetfone' as my voip provider.

Quality was good most of the time but could get very weak at peak periods. This was caused by insufficient band width at the exchange.

I have now gone completely wireless and voip is good most of the time, but once again it can on occasions be poor quality, during busy periods.

Patto....broadband is wireless via Telstra & VoIP is Maxotel running through a Billion Router.

Frank, you mention that your VoIP is next to useless at home, what about your broadband, are you still getting reasonable speed?

Hi Frank, As you are using wireless broadband it may be the signal is not as strong at home. I have found that my net works fine, but at busy times it is not fast enough for VOIP. Can't think of any other reason.

I checked Maxotel rates and see they charge a monthly fee. It may pay you to check out mynetfone....

no monthly fees, 15 cents/minute to mobiles. I have been with them for nearly 10 years.

Thanks Patto44....details noted. Have also wondered about the signal strength and am intending to investigate whether an external antennae might prove beneficial. Plenty of folk use these while travelling for their vans or motorhomes, so worth a shot I think.

I once tried VOIP on mobile broadband (3g) and it's pretty much useless due to the upstream being capped in speed by most of the carriers.

You mention it works better when travelling - is this in country areas. The reason I ask this is, I have found with MBB I most always get better speeds in country areas as opposed to larger towns and metro regions - simple reason been less users chewing up the network resources. Where I am, once 3.30/4pm hits (when kids get out of school) the speed drops significantly and doesn't pick up until later on.

Having said the above, I recently changed providers (still on the Optus network) and the increase in speed has been dramatic to say the least, first time ever I have reached speeds of 5/6 M/Bits per second - with the previous supplier I was lucky to get 1MB/s most times, if at all. Ironically even though I've disconnected with them before using my allocated download limit they sent me an e-mail today stating they are going to charge me $200 for excess use. Right! Think not.

Thanks VKPORTABLE....you are on the money with comments pertaining to country use and I have noted the school kids timetable, but have never remotely seen the speeds you mention.......the transfer to VoIP was a simple cost cutting measure and for home use very disappointing, ok elsewhere.

We have been in Ballina for a few days and phone has worked just fine, made a number of interstate calls all with perfect clarity both ways, hence my previous comments re antennae upgrade....will let you all know the outcome in due course.

If you already have 3-5 bars of signal then an external antenna isn't going to make VOIP any better. Unless of course there is some local source of interference.

Main reason for VOIP not performing well, whether it be via ADSL or MBB is packet loss, although with ADSL it would want to be an awfully bad line to suffer packet loss, its more common on MBB where the upload speeds are slower then the download (as upload is capped speed-wise).

Since our last discussion I`ve spoken with my VoIP provider (Maxotel) about the problem and they think that an upgrade to 4G will do the trick, allowing that it will revert to 3G in country locations.......however it`s no problem west of the Great Divide. Have looked at a couple of different units at  the Telstra Shop, but am unsure which to choose, any advice ??

Patto...how easy is it to connect with Mynetphone ?? as I`m next to useless with these things..........my current set up was put together by a guy and is now out of contact, so connection would need to be very simple.

I use Mynetfone and have for years. It wasn't too hard to set up from memory. I have a Billion router. They had the settings on the website I think from memory. I also have a sip app on my mobile phone and had sip on my laptop so could make calls through them as well.
