There are economic projections around that have petrol at $8 a litre by the end of this decade!
In the past the predictions of the future cost of fuel were driven by the belief that oil was scarce, since we now understand that this is not true with the huge discoveries of readily accessible oil in recent times, it now appears to be regarded as a strategic driver to reduce the overall use of fossil fuels.
Given that these things are often just scare mongering, I would not expect it to come true. BUT, I would expect that we will see significant increases in the next two years while OPEC take advantage of their current almost monopoly.
Do not be surprised to see fuel go past $2 in the next 12 months.
Wasn't all that long ago we were worried about petrol going to $1.00 a litre. Smokes to be $2.00 a pack, Beer to be 50c a pot. Times they are a changin'. Bought my first house in 1990 for $25,000, bank lent us 95% of their valuation. We borrowed $24,980. Just sold our last house for $550,000 having purchased it 14 years ago for $140,000.
We just came home from 6 weeks in Europe (Spain, France, Italy) and the cost of petrol was $2.60 to $2.80 per litre. Diesel around $2.40 - $2.60.
When I bought my first car petrol was around 20 cents per GALLON. (4.5 litres). That was 1960.

All depends on howmuch you buy. And the barge fare is expensive.I just grin and bear it.Anybody want to buy a charter boat? the winters are great , though. Bill
We were up there last month Bill and spent a day on the island. We decided to walk from the ferry terminal across to Horseshoe Bay, with the 4 and a bit K detour to have a look at the old gun emplacement on the way. I was a bit knackered by the time we reached the pub at Horseshoe, but all was good when I found out they had James Squires on tap. On the walk up to the gun emplacement a group of Dutch tourists stopped us to point out a Koala perched in a tree. They were so thrilled to see one in the wild. But I thought I'd better put them straight, and explained to them that it may actually be a very similar looking animal called a "drop bear". These should be avoided at all costs as they had very nasty habit of dropping down onto unsuspecting passers by and savagely attacking them. Once we reached the lookout at the top of the forts/gun emplacement a woman there said I was very mean to be teasing them like that... But she agreed, it was priceless to see the look on their faces as they listened to my advice.
An interesting idea. Is it just coincidence that Dick Smith has made a series of programs about energy prices called 10 bucks a litre that is being broadcast by the ABC from Thursday night- http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/ten-bucks-a-litre/ ?
