Yes very good point indeed, I didn't actually mention where I got mine from though, and they were not stolen. There are a number of companies, in WA, don't know about elsewhere, that buy and sell off the damaged crates, or those that have gone past their sell by date!!
A1 salvage also sell off pallets, totes, drums, fruit picking boxes, and a whole heap of other items that we admire and could utilise.
Not everything has to be stolen and we can all help to utilise scrap instead of landfill can't we. And yes wouldn't it be great if we could get bread for less than 99c per loaf.

If you have a rear bumper to carry the sapre wheel you maybe able to fit a small box See a lot of small vans with rear mounted boxes but watch the weight of contents

On my caravan, I welded a couple of sheets of that door security mesh, (you know the stuff that makes it impossible to clean the dust off of the fly screen) between the chassis rails. My chassis rails are 24 cm deep, and those blue crate that "Steggles" use for deliveries to those two takeaway chicken outlets, ERRRrrr one of them say's it's a TREAT to eat and the other one, ERRRR is it RED Chook's, anyway, the blue crates are 22 cm tall, I get six empty crates under the van which I use when we are on-site or for when i empty the drawers in the tug when we go camping and leave the van in storage. Inside the crates a standard fuel container (20 ltr jerry) fits perfectly, as does a standard 20 litre water container, so, I carry three water and three fuel containers.
I will stress............ The racking underneath the van is purely for the EMPTY containers, which are then used when we go camping without the caravan.
I' don't have any pictures, but if you really want to see them I'll get underneath on Saturday and take a piccie or two for you.
Hope this helps
Regards
Mark

Mark, please don't encourage other GN's to even think about 'borrowing' those plastic crates from 'whoever'.
Before I retired, I used to be a computer consultant. A National bread chain (name suppressed) was loosing such an enormous quantity of crates at an unbelievable high replacement cost, that they called me in to build a special database linked into their daily delivery schedules. This database was solely to record the total number of crates going out daily to every bread sales outlet (over 500 outlets just from the main Brisbane bakery alone) and record the number of daily return empty crates. They actually had 2 'special employees' that went to outlets that 'under-returned' to try and track down who was 'lifting' the crates. These 2 employees have initiated quite a number of successful prosecutions against offenders.
Just to give you some idea of the magnitude of the problem, this one bakery was loosing over $4500 of unreturned crates a month - x 12 months. Then multiply that by the other eleven main bakeries in that chain nationwide, and maybe you might see how this impacts the price of bread you and I pay for in the shops. I guess other food suppliers who deliver in plastic crates are experiencing much the same problem !
Most outlets stack the empties out the back of the shop and those in the know simply go round the back and lift - many crates are taken by 'small local' shopkeepers as they are too stingy to buy their own, but many by individuals for 'storage' purposes'.
These crates are specially made to fit a specific number of loaves of bread neatly into the crate - each crate costs more than double the similar crates that you and anyone else can buy from K-mart. The bakeries see the problem as similar to the annual 'shop-lifting' bill to the nations economy. New replacement crates now have 'special anti-theft' devices embedded in them, and a small hand-held scanner will pick up any tagged crates within a five metre radius, so if someone hides the crates behind a pile of cardboard boxes, the scanner will find them.
Before I made this database, I never really thought about the impact of the problem, but was stunned when I found just how massive a problem it really is.
Just my two-bob's worth - gee, I'd like to pay less for my bread. - if the practice was successfully stopped maybe the cost of bread would reduce appropriately.

On this forum I've seen some time back a neat under van water and waste water pipe storage system. I liked the design because it allowed the pipes to be laid straight out flat no need to coil them up it was a real neat looking unit saving in boot/ drawbar space It's a long time back so you will need to use the archive search facility .
For memory it consisted of a number of 50mm down pipes mounted next to each other and fitted with anti vermin flaps to stop the hoses coming out while on the road . Try the techie page

Any weight you add is best located as close to the axles as you can get or forward of the axles. I don't recommend adding any extra weight to the rear bumper. And keep in mind that you must not exceed the vans payload allowance. Ozjohn

Hi Mark, Run into you and your good wife while you were working at the Billabong (Red Car) tavern/ roadhouse. We used to call in to get those famous bacon and egg toasted sangers you were so known for. We were the two who worked out at the Shark Bay Mine.
And buy the way from meeting you on a few occasions you sure as hell did not look like THE BREAD CRATE BANDIT.
Regards Herbie.
PS. Like your idea re the bread crate,we just use cheapo plastic tubs.
