Hi all could anyone tell me is it possible to go to Cooktown from Cairns via the ferry with a van in tow? is the road suitable or is the Mulligan Hwy the only way to go? thanks Bill
Do not take a c'van up the coast road as after Cape Trip it gets very rough and steep in places , and is a 4wd track. NOT recommended for vans of any sort! Bill
Hi Bill
The Mulligan is really the only way to go from Cairns but if you are up that far why not go no to Mossman and then up the Blinman Track as far as Cape Tribulation when travelling up this road you will see some absolutely spectacular Rain forest and awesome beaches well worth the time.
from the Cooktown end you can travel back down the track which is very different from the Cooktown end and stop off at the famous Lion's den pub for lunch, we spent four days in Cooktown and found that was enough to see most things including LPG at the Caltex for $1.45 per litre cheapest fuel was the servo just north of town.
Have a great trip

We had heard horror stories about this road so left the camper-trailer at Cape Trib (where we were set-up) and went up to Bloomfield Falls in the Prado. Decided it was do-able, so we towed the camper-trailer through a couple of days later. There's a couple of narrow parts with a 1 in 3 slope, and the water-crossings are rocky and holey and variable in depth. The driver was quite pleased with himself, and we stopped for a cuppa a bit north of the lions den. Along came a Wicked Camper who had made it all the way through, no wonder those vehicles are wrecks!
I have not long back travelled the same section of track/road ,and yes it is a challenge in parts, and you do get the d/heads who think they are on a mission to do it quicker than their mate did it(Their is some kind of comp going on inside a 4x4 club )
We did it with out even a flat or puncture.
In saying all this some of the off road campers and trailers made to day do not come with real off road gear. The off road these type of manufacturing businesses are aiming at is a trip on a un bitumen road surface.
I spoke to him and his entire tow bar broke off. He was on a slight downhill and said he was able to accelerate and stop the camper running into the vehicle.
I went thru there a few times in my trusty '75 landcruiser shorty (about 15 years ago) , and have to say that the road condition is variable and may be OK for conventional car one month and not the next. Scariest part for me was approaching a narrow crest to have one of those huge off-road people carriers come charging over the top in the opposite direction with no consideration for other road users. Beautiful trip tho'........
