Tamworth to Broken Hill

Rhonda and I will be heading off Monday am for Broken Hill, we will be travelling through without stopping at Wilcannia or Nyngan.  We are all for alternate camping as we are totally self contained. We would welcome comment, advice or suggestions for stop offs and must see on our trip. We will be spending time at Silverton before heading down the peninsula's of SA. We have a month, oh and a diesel heater.

Don't worry too much about the goats, as far as hazards go they get out of the way especially if you just give them a blast of the horn; sheep and emus are a different matter at all times as are the scrub wallabies around dusk and twilight. Drive to the conditions and you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies,  lots of free campers is reassuring someone to park up with at night is good I think.

Don't forget the fruit-fly quarantine point before B'Hill and the next one at the SA border. We found the rest-stops/camps were good on the NSW side of the border but pretty ordinary in SA on that route.

Gertie , th fruit-fly inspection point is at Oodlawirra , but th zone may extend to B/H .

Not to be facecious - I was Allways taught  - If I saw an animal . TO Watch out for it's mate .

Why I mentioned th goats , was that there were Heaps of kids , at times some of them were different

sides of the road , on approaching , soe would run across th road in front of me to get to th nanny .

Also , what I have found , over the last 20yrs the goats are Not as shy as they were , some of them

are Not running away . Happy trails & Please drive safe.

Fruit fly Quarantine stops in this area a pain in the guts.

We stopped and eat as much as we could and binned the rest.dohbleh No official in site.

Spent approx $50.00 top up for fruit in Mildura on way to Broken Hill and approx 200ks out, another fruit fly stop.

Not this time charlie.

As if newly purchased fruit would have fruit fly. Just a load of rubbish to make you buy more fruit in their immediate area.

The only thing that resembled fruit fly was around the bins.

Uneventful trip thus far, camped up about 50 k east of Cobar in road side free camp, very wet underfoot after yesterday's rain in the area, wow straight roads and big road side paddocks. Critter sightings today 4 roo, 2 fox, 1 pig all on the road side deceased, 3 goats and about 40 Emu all off the road. $1.61 a litre for diesel at Warren.

We always think this fruit fly quarantine enforcement is a joke ,where there is no humans manning the disposable bins,I would have no hesitation in saying every time we have passed through these un maned quarantine places more people drive through with more fruit and vegies than a green grocers shop. We were behind a 5th wheeler once and when we stopped at a servo they were there with all this fruit in a box ,I asked him and her did the servo sell fruit and he said ..don't think so mate.I then asked where he got his fruit from he said back woop woop ,so it only works if the person is honest and cares about our farmers lively hood.

And most of the time the ground around the bins have more fruit and vegs than the bins have in them and YES the fruit fly is hanging around like a swarm of bees.So if the dept of Ag is serious about combatting the spread of fruit fly ,,man the damn zones. They recon the only time you ever see these mobile officers out and about is if it is a public holidays.

on th way to Adel , I went through Pinnaroo , no one at tick gate , coming out , no one at Oodlawirra .

Ah ha it is winter , not many flies around . I Believe it is Not th fruit we buy from th shops , but the

roadside stalls , the amature growers , th people who don't spray they're trees , I don't spray mine .

I stopped at a Fruit fly bin on the way down, thin it might have been south of Grong Grong or near there. Certainly not on a border. I stood at the bin and ate my banana then threw the skin in the bin. Thought I better just in case someone was watching. 2 caravans came in while I was there and dumped fruit.

Would it make any difference if you had a receipt, if pulled over, that the fruit was purchased from a shop and not a roadside stall?confuse

Currently at camps 6 Sa 324 Black Rocks south 15k NW of Perterbough, off to Port Augusta for a couple of days. Did the quarantine things, no one on duty but we had planned it pretty well so no waste.

roads have been great with only a few trucks and as before the animals have been. Well behaved. Watched the sunset at Silverton last night, very nice but with a cloudless sky was no after glow.

Camping grounds at Silverton $10 pp per night unpowered, a drink at he pub worth a visit.

thanks to all who contributed to this thread.

We are currently camped at Copi Hollow, near Menindee. Have a grassy lakeside powered spot. Sunset over the lake last night was superb. Our site costs $25 a night but apparently there are some even better free camp spots a bit further along. Defintely worth the detour out from Broken Hill.
