A big g'day to you, too! And so say all of us, Amen. Remember those luggage racks for Kombi poptops, the ones that were fixed over the cab leaving room for the poptop to operate? I had one made years ago. Now I'd like something similar for my single cab Courier with slide-on. The slide-on sits about a foot higher than most so there's a space between the roof of the cab and the floor of the cab-over for a short (600mm - 2 foot) luggage basket to carry an extra spare wheel. Are ya with me?

I've seen the basket type racks on eBay but they're 1.3 or 1.6 meters long, way too big. I could use two single bars and fit some kind of platform on top I suppose. Any suggestions from the forumites?

Considering your need to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible with your rig how about the aluminium security mesh that is used for windows and doors.
It's light and easy to bend.
You could attach 4 brackets directly to the mesh and mount them to the gutter.
Our dump shop here in Cairns has tons of old security doors and it only costs a couple of dollars for most things, don't know if you have a dump shop near you.
My first stop is always the dump shop but after the GFC they only have about 10% of what used to be there. Seems all of a sudden people weren't throwing as much stuff away.

Go to the closest wreckers , and have a walk round. There always seems to be something similar to what you need if you look long enough. Dumps are good, but fossicking seems to be illegal these days. Bill

 I wasn't suggesting " fossicking " Bill.  Some dumps, or to use the new PC term " transfer station ", employ staff to sort out some of the reusable items which are then on sold.

Our dumpshop here in Cairns is good because it seems to be where a lot of people get rid of stuff and catch the plane back to where they come from.

Some wreckers are wary of litigation if people wander through their yards, used to good years ago but we're all so much better protected now with the new laws covering every single move we make. [ Sarcasm, the lowest form of wit ]

 A few people got needle sticks which was what caused the anti fossicking regulations at dumps  I think.

Thanks for the tips (no pun intended) guys. Wrecking yard is a good idea (as long as the bloke doesn't think I'm trying to flog the camper hehe) not only for the rack but also for a spare wheel.

I am a "dumpologist", and usually bring back more than I take. Its just another pastimehurt by those blasted workplace , heath, and safety laws.Its amazing what people will throw away.Its a pity you can,t "fossick" any moreIf I was down Gary's way , we could probably make one from bits and pieces from the hardware.Just a few thoughs, trying to help. Bill

 Agreed. I was one of the people who spent a lot of time at the dump and ended up with a major slice in the arm after loading some old casement windows onto the trailer. The way of life that existed some 20-30 years ago has been sanitised so much now that it seems you have to break some bylaw or regulation to enjoy yourself.

At our dumpshop there's quite a few cargo barriers out of 4wd station wagons and with a bit of fiddling about  would make an ideal basket for the top of that courier.

Thanks for the link, QK. Pick up is a bit of a worry - prolly cost as much to courier to Taree as to buy a used one. I'll shop around locally first and if I can't find anything I think I'll get two bars and have a workshop make a basket thingy out of steel or aluminium mesh. I remember that old Kombi roof rack used to hum at 60km/h when it was empty hehe. A couple of ks slower or faster and it would stop. It was okay with a load tho, and was very useful for carrying the room tent that attached to the side, plus all the other gear.

Thule and Rhino-Rack make baskets like these  - You just need the cross bars to mount it on.
