Our first trip north with van.

My wife and myself are planning our first trip north, leaving from Bendigo and travelling up to Gilgandra, and then inland through Walget to Lightning Ridge,my first question regards to Lightning Ridge is it worth a couple of days stop over to look around there or just keep going. We plan on leaving on our trip as soon as these up coming school holidays are over,as we like to travel in the quietest as possible, and tend to stay clear of busy highways where possible, and we do find small inland towns very interesting and friendly. So plan on leaving around the 18th July.We will be going to Tin Can Bay to visit relatives,on our way home would like to go across to Boondooma Dam to try and catch some of those Redclaw that have read so much about, which is my next question can they be caught all year around or are they like the yabbies here in Victoria and only out and about in summer.I have a Kayak that I carry on the roof and am trying to decide if to take it or leave it home.

Love this forum have learnt so much, haven't had to ask for any help up to now as I usually go into search and have been able to find what have been looking for.Maybe when the gn's are moving south again I will be able to help out with info.

Thank you all Des

Haven't been to Lightning Ridge yet but I can't imagine anyone not stopping for a few days or longer.

Hey Des,

We are also on our Maiden Voyage and left Tassie on the 21st April.  We are currently "holed up" in Yeppoon and enjoying the sunlight and warmth.

On our journey North we stayed at Lightning Ridge for 3 nights . . . . . . . . . it wasn't long enough!  But it did create the need to return some other time.

There's lots to do there all of which is interesting and fun.

When you go do yourselves a favour and choose to stay at the Crocodile caravan park.  It's far from flash but is soooo quirky you'll love it and the crowd there are a delight.  The owners host a Happy Hour every evening and it's fun meeting all the folk staying there.  Not a large park but definitely a memorable one.  The showers have to be seen to be believed and the hot water is to die for.

Blame me if you don't enjoy it . . . but you WILL !!!

Cheers folks and enjoy your trip . . . we are !

Ref the redclaw. You would be pretty hard pressed to catch any in the cold weather. Like the yabbies they like the hot weather, we caught 600 in 5 days once at Boondooma but that was in April. Cheers Pete

Hi Des welcome to the forum I think a week in and around the Ridge would be a reasonable amount of time as there is lots to see and do.
